What Matters

Person At Bookstore

What matters is mattering.

Mattering to others.

Making others feel they matter.

Doing work that matters.

Making it known that what the the other person wants to talk about matters.

And so on.

What’s The Frame You’re Using?

Framing Work

A frame sends a strong signal about your work.

It marks it as complete. “Here I made this.”

It ties to how replaceable the work is, too. The more care and detail (and often time and money) but into the frame, the more meaningful people understand the work is. It builds a border around the work, increasing the longevity of it.

The frame is like your sign off, it’s the email with your resume attached, it’s the wrapping paper on the gift, it’s the cover of the book, it’s the demeanor you carry through a tough conversation, it’s the details so few will point out, but would miss if they were gone.

The frame we choose deserves as much attention as the work it contains.

Removed Promise

Cheeseboard Event

If an event or a project or a meeting doesn’t go as promised, there are two options.

You can leave it as a half-assed event and live with the knowledge that those who attended may never come back or trust you.

The other option is to do your best to remove the original promise. Apologize, refund, find a way to give the time and attention back.

Unsure And Uncomfortable

Two Leaders Atop A Mountain

That’s leadership to a T.

It’s going out into a territory of discomfort and uncertainty.

Fortuantely, leadership is a skill that can be learned, grown and excelled at.

But we must journey through – and then keep journeying.

Be More Dangerous

Person Learning Python Code

What do you know enough of to be dangerous about?

And is it enough?

Certainly, becoming an expert and a professional in a specific space is a necessity, but there’s no art out there that can’t benefit from you knowing more about other verticals.

Video, data, chocolate and Theodore Roosevelt are all areas worth considering.

You’ll be (pleasantly) surprised at how much they (and almost anything else) will help.

Projects Over The Years

Front Of Bar

Another year, another birthday. Two years ago I shared all the projects I’ve shipped over the last handful of years.

Last year, I didn’t have a large one worth sharing because I’ve been working on the one I’m happy to share this year.

Garth’s Brew Bar is opening in less than a month. You can read more about the journey on the blog and sign up for newsletter in the bottom right of the page. If you’re in the Madison, Wisconsin area – or traveling through – we’d love for you to swing by for a beer and a conversation.

Here’s to helping breweries thrive and raising the bar of bars!

Stay Positive & Cheers To Another Year

Two Ways To Gut Check Your Content

Testing Work

The first way to gut check your content is to ask yourself if you’re adding value to whoever may consume your content. If the answer is yes, then move onto the second filter.

Imagine someone in your industry or profession that you don’t like the content from. Could you imagine that they would publish the same work you’re about to?
