Different But Familiar

Woman Looking At Records

Different but familiar.

That’s what every brand needs to go for if they want to get attention, make an emotional connection, and build brand loyalty.

Some call it differentiation and relevance.

Others call it the unique selling proposition and connection.

It doesn’t quite matter what label you put on it; what matters is that you have it.

How are you combining the two?

Balancing Work And Connection

Connecting At An Event

There’s a reason you don’t see Sam Calagione slinging beers behind the bar or Howard Schultz making a mocha.

If a business is to succeed, leaders need to be making connections.

For larger companies, that falls on the executives. For medium companies, there are likely special events coordinators and other types of community ambassadors who are making connections while the work gets done.

For most of us, though, that work is done by the same people who are slinging beers and making mochas.

In a world where we have to wear so many hats, lets never lose sight of the two that are most important.

The one of doing the work that matters and the one of connecting with others through the work.

But Is It Consistent?

Canning Fruit

There are rock star athletes and happy people who only workout 20 minutes per day.

Same can be said for authors who simply free write for 15 minutes every weekday or podcasters that switch up topics, but record no matter what every Thursday.

Sure, content matters, but not as much as we convince ourselves.

What matters more is that we do the work we do consistently. That’s what creates value and loyalty and trust. And what’s success without those?

It’s Hard Enough For Them

Making It Easier

Everyone is struggling, fighting their own battle.

They have bosses breathing down their neck and friends putting pressure on them.

They have high hopes and hiccups throughout the day.

They’re trying to make a difference, get their work done and put some meaning into the world.

The best we can do is ask ourselves what we can do to make the life of the person we’re interacting with easier.

It forces us to put ourselves in their shoes, have empathy, and understand the world they’re working to make a difference in.

Only then can we really begin to make things easier.

Two-Way Street To Connecting

Simply put, you can’t get by with being the one who asks all of the questions.

To connect to others, you need to be inquisitive and to listen and have empathy, but there’s another thing you need to do.

You need to open up, answer questions and put yourself out there, too.

To be totally selfless, we actually need to shine a light on ourselves for others in addition to shining it on them.

How Soon Can They Feel A Part Of It?

Building With Sign On It

That’s the challenge of building any business/tribe. The sooner you can make people feel part of the endeavor …

  • the more loyal they will be
  • the more friends they have time to tell
  • the more they’ll forgive mistakes
  • the more they’ll support you

Very few can build something and have people come these days. It’s more about inviting people to come before you start building.

Taking Too Much Time

Person Working

When something seems to take a lot of time, it’s usually not the doing that takes forever; it’s the deciding to do.

A few hacks:

  • If you’re going to read an email. Commit to responding to it then and there, otherwise don’t open it until you can.
  • If you’re assigned a task you know will take a few hours, then immediately invest 15 minutes in starting it right after being assigned. Those 15 minutes will be enough for you to discover if you have all the pieces you need to actually complete the task when you sit down to do it.
  • If you’re trying to find time in your calendar to work on a task, then you have time to start the task. Swap searching for starting.
  • If you’re going to take action (or not), but sure to reflect on it at the end of the day. You’ll find that you feel more fulfilled at the end of days you put the work in than when you mull around with the decision to do the work or not.
