From Good At Work To Remarkable

From Good To Remarkable

Being good at work is out-dated and every day another business (small or large) is realizing they’ll do better with remarkable workers and not simply those who are good at their job. This leaves you with two options.

Do you stay with the job description you were given, the task list you’ve memorized? Do you show up on time? Do what the boss asks you to do, perhaps a little quicker than the boss has asked? Do you speak up at meetings because it’s your responsibility to say something? Do you stay until you’re pushed out?

Or do you become remarkable? Do you find a new way to make an impact and add to your job description? Do you quickly do the essential tasks not so you can go home early but so you have time to try something new, maybe fail, maybe get embarrassed? Do you become remarkable?

Yes, doing a good job will get you a paycheck and possibly a little praise for a while, and if you want to become remarkable, you can. It only requires you to begin thinking about the big picture and the dent you can make in it. It requires you to analyze your world view and define your calling.

For those who keep getting rejected, who can’t get the job they want, who don’t know why they haven’t gotten a job offer, it’s likely because the brand, agency, business, leader got smart and isn’t looking for someone who can do a good job anymore. They want someone remarkable.

Instead of settling on the first thing you can get or staying at the job you’re at until you’re kicked out, I wonder why you wouldn’t become remarkable?

Ignoring Art

Be Amazed By The World

It bothers me how much art I ignore on a daily basis.

I ignore the guy telling jokes in one part of town because my worldview is that comedy in that space isn’t worth my time.

Sometimes I’m ignorant of the little things like relationship tiffs with coworkers at work. I ignore them because in my mind, relationship-speak isn’t for the office.

So I miss a laugh. I miss showing sympathy and connecting with the coworker.

It’s frustrating that I’m so focused on what’s going on in my little slice of life that my default setting is to ignore the outside world. I don’t have time to be awed by a hot air balloon, I’ve got work to do.

I also don’t think I’m the only one and I don’t think I’m the only one it’s frustrating for that we don’t stop and see how beautiful the world is, how often people are getting out there and being vulnerable, how much we’re missing out.

As a marketer who has made this realization of how society rolls, it’s my goal to insert some trust, some care, and some respect for the artists who despite the crippling worldviews of so many passersby, still go out and play, fly, act, and give.

Although there are so many opportunities to improve this world, our lives and the lives around us, I think pushing a bit on our worldview to see the remarkable in the world is the most important.

What To Do

How To Find Out What You Want To Do

I’ve heard time and time again from people that they don’t know what to do.

I try to push on this when I can.

First, I point out that it’s not a lack of knowing that’s the problem. No one goes through life making sure they only do things they don’t like to do. There’s a trend in what they’ve chosen to do, chosen to be around, chosen to read up to this point. It’s on them to look back and connect the dots to find what they want to do.

Second, I question it’s not that they don’t know what to do, it’s that they’re waiting to be told what to do. (is it?)

Sure, you can wait for someone to tell you what they want you to do, but there’s a more awesome option: you can disrupt the industry with an idea, invention or just sheer passion.

They = you?

Two Measurements That Matter Most On Social

Social Measurements That Matter

Attention and care are the two measurements that matter most on social.

Number of views and click-throughs mean nothing if the user doesn’t hang around. When a user watches all five minutes of your video or explores your site for 3 minutes, that’s valuable, that signifies you have their attention and they are invested.

Number of likes or favorites means nothing. When someone comments or shares your post it shows 1) that they care about your content and 2) they want others to know that they care about it.

Those are the measurements that matter, the ones that are both quantitative and qualitative.

Truth About Learning

Learning The Hard And Easy WayLearning can be easy a lot of the time.

Reading helpful content is harmless to you. No one’s died from the spike in dopamine from a business seminar. And listening to podcasts as you lay down in your bed, what’s safer than that?

The truth about learning, though, is to be the best at your practice, to be an artist, you need a balance of safe learning and hard learning (otherwise referred to as learning the hard way).

It’s okay to get hurt. To feel bad when you fail. To get embarrassed.

Rocky could train with just a rope and a bag for a fight, but what sets him apart and puts him ahead of the competition is that he has taken hits in the ring, in home, and on the street.

The truth about learning is you become successful by doing it the easy way and the hard way.

The trouble comes when you try to replace the hard way for an easy one. You shortchange yourself when you do this.
