Life’s Lottery and The First Step To Winning It All

Reading Time: 3 minutes

There are 2 factors I want to go over. The first factor is the fact I want you to know that I understand how difficult it is to find what you are most passionate about. I know how it feels to want to do everything like becoming a hippie, becoming a UFC fighter, getting a college degree, becoming a vegan, becoming a lawyer, making a million, doing something life risking and the hundred other things you would love to do!

It was roughly two weeks before I created this website that I had my “what is the point of my life” breakdown. I was crashing and having mood swings because I wanted to do so many things. Side note: I might have mentioned it before, but I have over 250 life goals written down, and I have just as many passions. How could a person be happy when they are trying to walk on 250 paths at the same time? They can’t.

It was just last night that my friend was having a mental explosion only to realize that she does not know who she truly is. She wants to do so many things and it makes her feel lost and discouraged that she can’t commit.

I mean, Hermione Granger couldn’t even handle all the different classes she was taking at Hogwarts, even with a Time Turner!

A few weeks ago I had a deep conversation with my brother where he revealed one of the biggest reasons why he has not reached any degree of success or real happiness. He said “I just have too many interests”.

While I point out that the reason we run into this mental tumult is from the lack of commitment, do not think it is the lack of commitment to one path.

The Pick Three

There is an Illinois lottery game called “Pick Three”. Life is like the lottery and the best way to win is to….

you guessed it! PICK THREE!

She could definitely handle and prosper in becoming a certified personal trainer, a fitness model and a nutritionist.

My focus on this website is to advance my writing skills about life, to share my public speaking experiences and to provide information on the relationship between fitness and whole life balance (includes Parkour, my favorite).

Hermione Granger would certainly rule Arithmancy, Charms, and Herbology.

Personally, I know what the top three interests my brother could conquer that would require him to use all of his heart – He could become the greatest new age artist, one of the best skateboard instructors and a pretty awesome military nut.

The point is that we do not need to make a commitment to one thing in our lives. Nor can we completely focus on more than three passions. We are only humans, we do have limits. But, for some reason it’s a paradox, because when we limit ourselves, we become unlimited.

The First Step To Living Your Passion(s)

The second factor is the first step to doing what you love.  There will definitely be a time when you get to do one, two, or all three of the things you are most passionate about.

But for now, the first step to doing what you love is to create a purpose for what you do now – regardless if it is your passion or not.

I don’t particularly have an interest in my data entry job, regardless of the fact I can type 109+ words per minute, my highest ever being 149. But I changed my views and perspectives around to appreciate what I do. I created a work motto that incorporates why I am passionate about my job despite the fact I would like to be doing something else. It is this attitude that has allowed me to create a closer relationship with my coworkers, to be asked to apply for promotional position in the organization and to now be given more time and money to do the things I am truly passionate about.

The great part of this, is that it does not matter your current work position. By applying this attitude, you are making a secret path to do what it is you would really love to do.

Review

First Factor: As humans, focusing on one path in life will either lead us to boredom or a regret for not doing more. Also as humans, focusing on 25 different paths in life will burn us out or we will never follow anything through to the end. The winning number to life’s lottery is 3: Pick three passions. This will allow you to commit until the end because you will have enough energy and it will be enough variety so that you will always be excited and energized.

Second Factor: The first step and the best way to start living one or all three of your first set of passions is to find a purpose in your current career path. Has anyone ever told you that you can’t love another until you learn to love yourself? Well, you can’t live your passion until you find a passion in what you are currently doing. Whether you have to create a motto for the job you have now or simply remind yourself of the “good parts” of your job, I guarantee that with this new attitude, you will be living the passions you want in less than 6 months.

Stay Positive and FYI, The Pick Three Lottery Averages $500,000, But I Am Sure You Will Be Acquiring A Lot More

New Life Resolutions: An Out-Of-Your-Box Goal Challenge

“Change itself is neither good nor bad, but knowledge is always useful” says Christopher Paolini. What better knowledge to have than to know what you want from life? What you want today, tomorrow, a week from now, a month, a year, 20 years, 50 years, and the rest of your life.

I have about eight pages of goals, some scribbled on sticky notes, others on notepads, legal paper, college ruled, and printer paper. If I had better handwriting and artistic abilities, I would even make a poster board listing all my goals with pictures. There are times that I am more passionate about thinking of new goals than I am accomplishing them. Quite simply, I am fascinated with the concept of goals. Justifiably I have to make a post for New Years Resolutions.

Ever since I read “The Four-Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss, I continuously notice how cheap it really is to go on the vacations I want to go on. A one way ticket to Paris, an apartment, oil painting lessons, food, and a french language class for two weeks can cost less than 5,000 dollars. It may not seem cheap to you now, but I have to call you out on something… I know something you have done. It’s something I have done and everyone else in the world. You imagined winning the lottery…

Most of the time you win one million dollars. Do you realize that 10,000 dollars out of a million is 1% of your winnings? Now you’re going to have to trust my college education and a bit of deep common sense when I say that in your life time you will make an average of 2-6 million dollars (tax included). The point is, if you really wanted to take that two-week trip to Paris, you could VERY easily do it. Why is it in the “if I won the lottery” category. Put it on your New Life’s Resolutions list for 2012.

After I had written goals for today, 30 days, the year, five years I looked back at them and asked myself “where’s the fun?” All I wrote was about getting money, gaining more muscle mass, rising to success, publishing my book, finding a job I love, etc. Basically, the same goals as anyone else — to get what we want when we want it. Every page or two I may find a goal to take a trip somewhere but when I read it I even thought “Ha, only if I won the lottery”. I decided I needed an attitude adjustment so I challenged myself to write 110 goals..

110 goals without limitations, no false “reality”, and without the help of the lottery. Can we accept our fate for a moment, if you are reading this blog post, than I can guarantee you are going to be financially victorious. You are going to rise to success, earn a larger income than 6 digits and the job is going to be something you love. It’s who you are and who I am.. so why are we writing goals that we all know we will carry out?

I am going to admit, the first 20 goals I was skimping. It is as hard as you can imagine to think and write what you want out of life without any monetary boundaries. Nearing the half way mark it got even harder… I had to start detailing my goals like “go to a pepper tasting event in Chile and not get the runs”.

This year, forget writing new years resolutions on new years eve and start writing New Life’s Resolutions today.

I am more than happy to give you the 110 Life Goals Challenge. As I said before, everyone knows you are going to be a hit and happily make enough money to do whatever you want… so instead of making goals you know you will accomplish, go crazy and write Out-Of-The-Box Goals!

Knowing People and The “Informal Credential” Fallacy

Though “time” is the only constant in life, it is also the largest change we must adapt to. It’s a bit of an oxymoron isn’t it?

The farthest back that I have experience with the job market is when people walked into a business, asked for an application, filled it there, called them to check up on the application in a week, got an interview, and then got the job if their first impression and behavior was acceptable. This is just one process that was “the right way” at the time.

Though there are hundreds of different processes to acquire a job, job seekers are being grenaded with two specific processes.

1. Know Someone – No one cares about the olden days of apprenticeship and working for your parents. Kids grow up usually wanting to do the exact opposite of their parents. That leaves the fact that to get a job in an area of your interest, you have to know someone in the department. I don’t know why companies bother asking for references on the resume, the only reference they care about is word of mouth. The only opinion they care about is that of someone who they work closely too or that is already in the department. Your focus needs to be on people who love you and could talk about you all day THAT IS IN YOUR AREA OF INTEREST.  How do you do this? Well, I can answer that with a couple of options.

  • Don’t have the bachelor’s degree that’s required for the job you want? Apply free. Send the application in requesting that you would like to be the assistant to the person who gets the job you are after. Make sure that it is clear that you will work for free and help with whatever tasks that are assigned to you to help the person fulfilling the position. You are only after experience — to begin.
  • Anyone who types or writes a word can call themselves a journalist. So go to the business that you want the job at and request an interview with the owner or highest ranked person. You simply want to write a report on the company for your blog, school, website, etc. Sweet, you got your interview. Don’t let others tell you that your first impression is everything. It’s not. What you want to do is take your 15 minutes you got and turn it into a 30 minute interview. (Have enough questions prepared, but you should be having more of a conversation than an interview). You can talk about your interest in the field, but do not state your education or interest in a job. After you write your article and send it to the business, you can wait a week and call them back for a follow up interview. All of your visible or invisible readers want to know more and were interested in your content and the business itself. You are already on a friendly level with the owner and now you can focus the interview to bring out your knowledge of the business in question. Before you leave, have a card or contact information ready to give to the employer and bring up the idea of working for them for a pay check or for free. If you do not feel you are acquainted enough to accomplish this you can ask that you would like to interview some of the employees. Instead of winning over “the big-man”, win over the employees so they can put a good word in about you. They will only reassure “the big-man” of your qualities and abilities

2.  Informal Credentials – Who cares about a piece of paper, a few letters before your name, or how hot it is to be called Doctor “Smith”. What you can do to get a job without a degree is to surprise the employer with a list of different experiences related to the field. In the “education” area of your application write “Check out my experience in my Resume”.

  • The only way to get a job this way is to step out of your box and travel the world and to go after every experience in the related field. If you are into working for an Environmental group, start traveling to Australia and Ireland to see how they use their green bags and the politics around the topic there. Get acquainted with all angles of your interest from all the different parts of the world. An employer wont turn you down. Better yet, you may end up creating your own business instead.
  • For more on how to gain informal credentials, I will push you towards Tim Ferris http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2011/09/29/8-steps-to-getting-what-you-want-without-formal-credentials/

My question to you is, why is it not pushed to do these two processes IN ADDITION to getting formal credentials? I’ll help you with the easy questions here..

The only way someone is going to be successful in helping others find jobs is if they focus on a niche area of getting people employed. I have just shared with you the two largest ones. People share these concepts with others because no  one will listen unless it is quick and specific. We have since passed the era of receiving all the information on one topic. We only receive all the information on one small piece of the grand topic.

I am not saying that this information is unworthy and not should be followed, I am proposing that you combine these topics to create the original knowledge base that they were taken and separated from. Only then can you truly achieve absolutely any job you want at the same time as being surrounded by incredible people with the same interest and traveling the world.

A person walks into a job interview with a master’s degree in the field required from an Ivy league.

The next person that will be interviewed has the same degree from Australia, has worked in a similar company in London, and created another similar company in Hawaii which made just enough money to make it self-sustaining.

Which one gets the job?

Desk Job to Your Passion to Cancun

Have you been in a position where you simply felt bad for the person telling the joke?

Last week at my job, I was working in the conference room while my other co-workers were having a meeting. Many of my co-workers have worked at the office for a lengthy amount of time and have seen people come and seen people go.

It was on the topic of a past employee that the joke was made. One person brought up how, Reagan left our office to work at another branch. Unlike our office, those who work where Reagan transferred to, have to pay for their vacation.

My co-workers began to relive their experience working with Reagan. They recalled how she would always carry a goal sheet for the day when she would walk into work. The goal sheet was always lengthy. They were making a joke out of it, one person said, “They require her to carry out a lot there and they even make her pay for vacation, that is just sad. I love not having to pay for vacation. I can’t wait to go to Cancun for four days next month. I have never been there and I need to get away and relax.”

Everyone she spoke to were nodding their heads and letting out chuckles of agreement. I walked out of the room because I felt terrible. I felt bad that they NEED to take a vacation to get away from work.

Do you want to know what I found out about Reagan after that?

She LOVES her job.

People at the office were unaware of the reason she set so many goals at work. She aimed for what she would LOVE to do the rest of her life. By carrying a set of goals and a determined attitude with her every place she went, it was not surprising she landed her dream job.

Would you be surprised if I told you Reagan is the highest paid employee at the branch and has been to Cancun three times in the last two years with her husband?
