The Ideas Business

Plant Growing

We’re all in it.

The cashier is in the ideas business. So is a nurse. So is a marketer and a dog walker.

Ideas to move our work forward. Ideas to change our culture. Ideas to make things better.

It’s not good for anyone when a day goes by without an idea or two.

For The Money

Flower Shop

Doing things for the money leads to a lack of authenticity and connection.

There are risks at large that may not exist if you were to do it for something else; say a guest experience or because what you’re doing helps change the culture.

Money isn’t a fair rationale if your goal is to make an impact on the world.

Certainly it’s a byproduct, but not one to base customer interaction decisions on, cut corners on or use as an excuse when the consequences of doing things for the money becomes real.

Spaghetti On The Wall

Hands down, keep throwing spaghetti on the wall and seeing what sticks. Put yourself and your ideas out there. Show up again and again.

And if you find nothing you’re throwing is sticking.

Find a new wall.

Leaping And Launching

Leaping is more of a solo act. It’s about vulnerability and personal goals. Taking a leap gets us from where we are to where we want to be while being in terms with the risk of not making it. It’s close to our hearts and often (rightfully) self gratifying.

We need people to leap. It redefines worldviews and, quite frankly, what makes life worth living.

Launching is important, too, but it’s more of a collaborate effort. It requires tension and an audience. Launching an idea changes the world around us; how people interact, the culture, and inspires others to launch, too.

We need people to launch. It raises the bar for average and, quite frankly, what makes life worth living.

Cost Of Failure

Even when a task goes awry, it’s infinitely better than what would have happened if we didn’t do the work in the first place.

The cost of failure may be more than the cost of success, but it’s certainly not more than the cost of doing nothing.

If winning the game is about providing the most value, the path to winning is getting out what you can from both success and failures.

And the path to losing? Well, I think that’s clear enough.

I Know

Person Using A Video Camera

Knowing means responsibility to take action.

Knowing means the onus is on the one who knows to take the next step.

Knowing the right thing to do isn’t really knowing unless you do it.

Knowledge is power and with great power…

If you know, there’s no point in sharing you know; go ahead and do.
