The Trust Recipe

Open Sign That Says "Come In We're Open And Awesome"

There’s a recipe for building trust with teams, communities, colleagues, significant others, and just about every person under the sun.

Toss in proactive communication.

Mix it with honesty.

Be forward about it.

Serve up some empathy with a cup of vulnerability, too.

Ensure there’s more listening than talking.

And, lastly, add a pinch of purpose.

Two Types Of Help

Helping Another Person

There’s one type of help that we’re all familiar with. It’s the type of offering help, extending a hand, asking how we can make someone’s life easier.

We know how good it feels to be on the offering end and the offered end.

Another type of help is one that can have a lot of power, influence and positive impact. It’s the type of help that’s given without being asked for.

It’s seeing someone struggle and stepping in before they cry for help. It’s about mentoring people up. It’s about investing more time outside of our own bubble and in the space of others’.

It’s easy to tell someone that you’re here to help them however they may need it.

It’s priceless (for both parties) to opt for action instead.

One Step Up

People All Around

It doesn’t require a ton to be better.

It may be as simple as giving a phone call instead of an email.

It might be taking one more step forward, closer to the audience.

It could even be giving one more line of praise or proof that you’ve listened.

Stay Positive & Give More, Even Just A Little

Cycles Of More

People On A Boat Working

The more you do, the better you get and the more you can do.

The more you listen, the better you can connect and the more you can listen.

The more productive you get, the better impact you can have and you’ll become even more productive.

The more time you invest optimizing a process, the better the result will be and the more you can go back to optimize.

The steady thread through every cycle of more, of course, is action.

The cycle of more benefits those who turn it.

Stay Positive & Consistent

What Matters

Person At Bookstore

What matters is mattering.

Mattering to others.

Making others feel they matter.

Doing work that matters.

Making it known that what the the other person wants to talk about matters.

And so on.

What’s The Frame You’re Using?

Framing Work

A frame sends a strong signal about your work.

It marks it as complete. “Here I made this.”

It ties to how replaceable the work is, too. The more care and detail (and often time and money) but into the frame, the more meaningful people understand the work is. It builds a border around the work, increasing the longevity of it.

The frame is like your sign off, it’s the email with your resume attached, it’s the wrapping paper on the gift, it’s the cover of the book, it’s the demeanor you carry through a tough conversation, it’s the details so few will point out, but would miss if they were gone.

The frame we choose deserves as much attention as the work it contains.

Removed Promise

Cheeseboard Event

If an event or a project or a meeting doesn’t go as promised, there are two options.

You can leave it as a half-assed event and live with the knowledge that those who attended may never come back or trust you.

The other option is to do your best to remove the original promise. Apologize, refund, find a way to give the time and attention back.
