Outsiders

Outsiders are worth inviting in.

Not to convert them to insiders, but to pressure test the tribe you’ve built.

Consider the trucking logistics company that asks a Head of Compliance of a winery to visit their operations and provide feedback.

The differing views is what may define the company’s differentiators.

And it’s simply a good gut check on if you’re holding up to the values your company is committed to.

Of course, you don’t need to have a company to do this. You can do it for personal values, too.

Stay Positive & Engage The Outsiders

A Head Start

There’s really nothing that you’re starting from scratch with.

Have an idea for a book? Toss it to chatgpt to get it started.

Want to direct a movie? Check out the class your community college offers.

Itching to start a new business? Many on LinkedIn are awaiting your connection.

Not knowing where to start or not wanting to start because you’re too far behind no longer makes sense.

The Tiny Signals

Myles Smith has impactful lyrics and great rhythms, but I’d argue what makes the emotional impact of his song so much more meaningful than others is his notes of “ohhhhhhhh.” (Stargazing for example)

Or consider the impact of the “blegh” in metalcore music; it’s an emotionally charged non-lexible vocable sound between lines in a song. (List of examples here)

The reverse can be said when it comes to public speakers. The “um” is a tiny signal that taints a speech and removes the moments for our brains to process what we’re hearing. (It applies um when it is um written um, too, um. See how hard um this um is to um process?)

It’s a tough challenge but consider being extra observant today of all your tiny signals. Are they enough? Are they the right ones?

The Idea Has To Go Out

There’s no good time to share an idea with someone.

It’s fun to convince ourselves that there is. You know. When it’s polished or when it’s with a friend who will like it by default. Those are safe bets but they’re not good bets.

There is a bad time to share an idea with someone, though.

Can you guess when the bad time is?

Stay Positive & The Answer: Tomorrow

Hard To Notice

It’s hard to notice if someone is driving better than you.

Hard to notice if someone is getting more out of a book than you are.

It’s hard to notice if the meaningful work you’re doing is actually making a difference.

Hard to notice if that “I appreciate you” you said to your colleague resonated with them.

You can start to imagine how easy it would be to note all the easy things there are to notice.

Which begs the question: which are you observing more of?
