Upsell Or Downsell

It’s quite easy to sell something unique of similar value after you’ve made an initial sale.

People are committed and enrolled in your story. They can easily rationalize buying the next thing you offer.

The problem for marketers is not upselling, but getting the first sale that starts the chain reaction.

My two cents is to consider the ways you can downsell– as in, what do you need to sell even before the thing you’re trying to sell now?

Real life example from the bar: we’re selling specialty themed beer boxes. The upsell can be a pint when they pick them up or a subscription to the boxes or some merch. As for the downsell, we’ve learned that we can sell tasting events around the theme of the beer boxes to encourage people to buy the beer boxes.

The problem wasn’t the beer boxes themselves, the price or the value; it was the lack of connection to the box in advance.

What you’re offering isn’t always the problem; it’s likely the enrollment people have signed up for in advance.

Elements Of Marketing Persuasion

Here are a handful of ways to tackle a marketing strategy.

  1. How you can you reduce frustrations? Which frustrations?
  2. How can you create calm or make the user, client or customer relaxed?
  3. How can you make your brand consistent with other touch points but still offer a slight twist?
  4. How can you be quicker to respond?
  5. How can you get them to laugh?

Right To Or Need To

Many people speak up when they feel they’re right.

Other people speak up when they feel they need to.

Sometimes those who feel the need are right.

But it’s the need to speak that moves people.

Telling someone they’re wrong and you’re right will only piss them off.

Telling someone what you need to; that changes people.

Wall Smudge

There’s not a wall near wherever you’re reading this right now that doesn’t have some small blemish.

Interesting to think how we don’t waste time patching up the blemishes every day and instead we carry and live on with our purpose.

Even more interesting to think how we do that just fine, but when it comes to our work or passion project, we spend more time finding and removing the smudges instead of doing the work that matters.

Certainly if the color of the wall is completely different than you or your guests want, then change it.

But that smudge?

Reveal Your Secrets

Share your ideas and you might get asked to lead the execution of them.

Share your thoughts and they might act on them and you can learn from how they did it to do it better yourself.

Reveal your secrets and more can benefit.

Showcase your thinking and you might just raise the industry average.

So much good can come from showing your cards. Far more good than the bad concerns and worries your lizard brain makes up when it tries to convince you to keep them to yourself.

Someone might steal your idea? Good. Let’s see what they can do with it and then what you can do to make it better still.

Slightly Different

Providing service that’s slightly different than expectations can be a good thing.

When you apply for a project, you might find out that it’s slightly different than you thought – which can be a good thing.

The new way you’re being taught is slightly different than how you previously learned, but it’s better.

There are two takeaways here.

One is that nuance matters in doing better work.

Two is that there are opportunities for you in everything because no matter what you pursue, it will be slightly different than what you envisioned going in.

It all matters how you look at it.

Why Do People Take On So Much?

Because they give a damn.

Because they like the feeling of fulfillment at the end of the day.

Because they want to keep the community they’re involved in feeling cared for.

Because they keep finding time to do more once they set out to do more.

Because people are naturally storytellers and the more you do, the more stories you have to share.
