Slightly Different

Providing service that’s slightly different than expectations can be a good thing.

When you apply for a project, you might find out that it’s slightly different than you thought – which can be a good thing.

The new way you’re being taught is slightly different than how you previously learned, but it’s better.

There are two takeaways here.

One is that nuance matters in doing better work.

Two is that there are opportunities for you in everything because no matter what you pursue, it will be slightly different than what you envisioned going in.

It all matters how you look at it.

Why Do People Take On So Much?

Because they give a damn.

Because they like the feeling of fulfillment at the end of the day.

Because they want to keep the community they’re involved in feeling cared for.

Because they keep finding time to do more once they set out to do more.

Because people are naturally storytellers and the more you do, the more stories you have to share.

Dancing With It

It’s not easy to let go of the thoughts that prevent you from growing your idea, passion or business.

I’d argue you shouldn’t. Far better than letting go is to dance with it.

Acknowledge that things will be different as you grow in size; others you put in leadership positions will have a different style than you; you might lose some of your tribe.

Once we accept those are a given, we can work with them rather than have them working against us.

Brands can’t grow standing still.

Feeling Involved

If there’s the option to help someone feel involved in a project, it’s best to lean into it.

The lizard brain in us will say that we should let them be; they’re busy; they won’t care like we care; they’ve got enough on their plate… and so on.

But the reality is, many people leave positions, quit jobs, pivot to other hobbies and communities and organizations because of the lack of feeling involved in them.

It’s All A Game

The important decision to make is which game it is you’re playing?

Is it a numbers game – and are the macro trends really important?

Is it an empathy game?

Is it a competitive game?

Is it a game of life balance?

The game you decide to play will define your brand, define your audience and define your friends.

Without Being Asked

I firmly believe those who make the biggest impacts in the world, climb occupational ladders the fastest, and build the strongest of brand loyalty are those who do things without being asked.

That is, they have such heartfelt empathy and foresight that they can anticipate the needs and wants of others and they act on it quickly.

The cool part? It’s not about DNA or background or education or anything other than simply giving a damn about others.

You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want. – Zig Ziglar

Work That Is Cared About

Work that is cared about gets accolades and compliments and catches on like an ideavirus.

There are a lot of good indicators of someone who cares about the thing you created.

There are, however, a lot of negative indicators, too.

Someone who wishes what you made was different. Someone who what you made is rubbing them the wrong way. Someone who simply wants you to know it sucks without any context.

All are signs that it’s something worth caring about, for better or worse.

There’s plenty to work on regarding the negative comments; taking the candor to heart and disregarding the naysayers, but none of that changes the fact that you made something that sparked someone to pay attention. Most have to pay advertisers to do that; you did it simply by saying “here, I made this.”
