Planting Seeds

There’s the work that needs to get done today. The urgent. The easy to-dos. The task list.

Then there’s the seed planting.

The moments of dropping an idea. The moments of sharing and showing the change that your idea could make. The investment of your time in the to-dos that you won’t see a return on until much later (and perhaps not at all).

Every day we have the chance to plant.

Getting To The Table

The talented linchpins in the service industry make getting to the table part of the show. They don’t focus solely on getting an order in or delivering the order at the table – though all that matters, too.

The remarkable service people smile on their way to the table. They’re observing and listening to those they pass and perhaps offering assistance – even when it’s not their responsibility in that moment.

I recall doing a brewery tour of New Belgium when the ambassador walked backward through the whole tour so that she never had her back to the guests.

It’s the little things and they always get noticed by someone.

Trading Your Day

Are you just exchanging your time for something today? Paying in to get something in return? Doing the work on your list that leads to more instant gratification?

Or are you building something that will last? Investing in the day, rather than trading it?

Sonder

Sonder is the understanding that everyone around you is living a life as vivid and complex as your own.

It aligns with the adage that if everyone put the shit that they’re dealing with in a pile and then they were able to pick and choose what they take back, they would take their own after seeing what other’s are dealing with.

It’s also brought to life when you show empathy and curiosity for another. It’s amazing what people are doing beyond what you’re originally talking with them about.

All the more reason to be human. Because everyone else is.

“I’ve Been Quiet”

Would they miss you if you were gone?

The irony is that the only way to get them to miss you if you were gone is to show up, every day, consistently.

And then don’t go anywhere.

You’re not meant to actually get the answer to the question “Would they miss you if you were gone?”

If you’ve typed a social post or started a blog entry with “I’ve been quite over the last X weeks because…” then you’ve missed the point of leading and marketing to your tribe.

The tribe doesn’t want quiet. It wants to know what you’re up to. The trials and tribulations. The wins and celebrations. The personal milestones and the moments you feel vulnerable about the work you’re doing.

To them, behind the scenes is supposed to be the scene.

Slight Change, Big Advancement

Most slight changes lead to slight advancements.

But it is remarkable when they do lead to big advancements.

Slight changes like taking a different way into work can re-calibrate your brain for a breakthrough idea later. Getting an opinion from someone you’ve never asked for advice from can be the game changing discussion for a decision you have to make.

Doing things differently pays dividends.
