It’s Never Easy At First

It’s going to feel like a lot of work. You’re going to be scared. You’ll want to seek out reassurance and help.

The work worth doing is never easy at first.

Same goes for work that’s assigned to you.

Same goes for any work that’s new.

You’re going to trip up and fumble a bit. You’ll find all the kinks in the process. You’ll learn where you over-promised and where you under-delivered.

That’s the reality of firsts.

And the reality of seconds? Simple. Take what you learned first and apply to learn more.

So, who is up for starting something new?

Afraid And Exhausted

Boat On Water

Most shy away from areas of fear or results of exhaustion.

Others run to them.

Not because they are masochists. Not because they enjoy it. But because that’s where the remarkable work happens.

If you’re not afraid and exhausted from time to time, the reality is that you’re not working at the edge where you’ll make a difference.

It’ll never get easier. But it’s always worth it.

Someone Cleaner

Person On The Water

There’s always going to be someone cleaner than you.

Someone more slick and witty than you.

Someone more muscular and more put together and someone with more money or a greater relationship or a bigger house.

There’s always someone.

But they don’t matter. Not really.

Not when it comes to appreciating what you have and working toward what you want.

That’s all you.

Three Great Feelings

Relief is an incredible feeling. It’s the yin to our mental yangs. It’s a reset on a positive note. Relief is weight off our shoulders.

Wu Wei is an incredible feeling. It’s personal harmony and free-flowing spontaneity. It’s a state of relaxation, but knowledge in that you have the energy and power if you were to need it.

Sonder is an incredible feeling. It’s an emotion that will change the way you interact with others. It’s complete empathy for another person (and yourself).

Three great feelings.

They’re worth searching for in yourself and others.

What Are We Here For?

Focused Pour

It’s worth starting with that.

No need to inspire around it. No need for a drum roll build up. No need to put it in an email after-the-fact.

Answering the question up front not only brings everyone involved in line together; it makes it easier to move in the right direction.

People In Motion

There’s power in numbers, but only if there’s motion.

A meeting with 13 people sitting in it, listening, waiting to be called on (and hoping they aren’t) isn’t very productive.

A virtual conference with everyone on mute and nearly everyone with their cameras turned off isn’t going to lead to incredible change.

There’s only power in numbers when the numbers bring the power.

Marches, workshops, brainstorms and other situations when people are in motion is where the work becomes meaningful.

If you’re leading a tribe (or a meeting), it’s worth ensuring your people are in motion if you hope to finish with more than what you started with.
