It’s Going To Suck

New Task Of Beekeeping

Anything that’s new that’s also worth doing is going to suck.

Sure, it’ll be good for professional development and might even by fun with a shot of adrenaline.

But really it’s going to be difficult, you’ll be frustrated and you’ll feel uncomfortable.

Now that we know that, we can better prepare. Here’s my advice:

  • Be insane with the amount of questions you ask others for clarification.
  • Go outside your circle to see if others have done what you’re having to do. Ask for their help.
  • Be up front with folks that it’s your first go at it. Not in the way of making an excuse, but in the way of letting them know you’re their to learn from their feedback.
  • After you ask for their feedback. Ask for more feedback.
  • Deliberately take breaks to do things you enjoy; things that don’t make you frustrated or uncomfortable.
  • And lastly, as soon as the task is complete, find another new one.

Time For Imagination

Photographic Shot Of Off Road Bike

There’s never been a better time to stretch our imagination.

What can we do differently? How can we make this better? What can we give a fresh coast of paint?

Employee training guides are being updated. Places are getting a deep clean. More art is being created than ever before.

People in our communities are making the choice to use their imagination for good.

Sure. We can use our imagination to increase our fear. But is that what we really want to look back and remember?

Nowhere To Hide

Decor On Greenery

At your next meeting or brainstorm:

  • list five things that could go most wrong
  • call out the thing that would result in not meeting the deadline
  • talk about the actions or behaviors that would hold the project back
  • share your biggest fears about the work

When we address all the stuff we so often ignore, it gives us nowhere to hide.

And when there’s nowhere to hide then all that leaves is the work worth doing.

From What?

Motorcycle

People don’t often make drastic jumps in behaviors or purchases.

They change lanes – not three or four at a time, but one.

It’s important we know what are people moving from when they choose your business or brand.

That way 1. You can seek more of them and 2. Know when a change to a product or service will also mean a change in who it will appeal to.

Knowledge is (horse)power.

The Personal Touch

Mark Made On Lamp Post

It might be a letter or kind words spoken.

It might be a one-time discount or an additional gift.

It might be a connect you offer or simply lending your ear.

Though the truth remains that with any interaction (and transaction!), there’s an opportunity for a personal touch.

It may not be written in the guidebook and you may not get a pay raise because of it; but it certainly makes both parties feel better.

It’s Still About Fulfillment

Shipping Work

More like, the feeling of fulfillment.

It’s the feeling when you’re fine going to sleep because you did meaningful work today.

It’s the feeling of having a to-do list checked off (even if you’re not one to make to-do lists).

It’s the feeling of accomplishment when a major task is off your plate.

Isolation isn’t an excuse to not feel fulfilled.

If anything, it’s more of an opportunity to feel fulfilled.

The time is yours.

Give & Be Given

Windmill

It’s incredible how much the posture of a friendship changes when we lend our ears more than our mouth.

It’s eye-opening how much work can improve when we give our heart to it.

It’s amazing how our culture can shift when we offer our time to meaningful initiatives.

No need to give and take. It’s given back.

Stay Positive & We Just Need To Accept It
