What We Don’t Realize We Missed

Holding Hands Skating

Our brains are great at hiding the fact we missed something remarkable.

By default, we don’t think about what would happen if we accepted someone’s invite or if we would have gone to work a different way or stayed out to lunch with a friend for 15 minutes more.

The only thing our brain does recognize is the value after we say yes, take a leap and counter our intuition to focus on and execute to the plan.

All that to say, there’s a lot that we miss and if you don’t feel like you are, well, that’s the auto-pilot speaking up.

Becoming We

Group Work

Culture can be evaluated by the pronouns used and it has no limits to how inclusive it can become.

Employees can say we. Customers can, too. The pronouns prove a sense of camaraderie and tribalism.

The more you hear “I” and “they,” the more room there is for cultural improvement.

Note: The solution may not be to ditch the culture for another. It may be to do what you can to elevate it. There’s no “we” until there someone that others want to be “we” with.

Maybe you don’t want to be the Olympic best or famous best, but when you feel the drive to be the best; that’s when you know you’ve found a passion.

If you’re doing work and not feeling like you want to do it as the best, it might be time to find different work.

They Want To Be Seen

Setting Up The Space

Most customers aren’t there for your product; they’re there for something else.

And the only way to learn what that something else is is to connect with them, listen to them, see them.

Quick example of a couple at a bar. They’re not there just to buy a couple of beers, but you wouldn’t know without asking “what brings you in today?”

Rather, they are there because they haven’t had a date together in two months.

So the switch needs to happen from how to serve them beers to how to elevate their date. Doing so makes them feel seen and feeling seen feels good.

Are They Connecting?

People Walking Together

That’s the real test if a marketing tactic works.

Is it resulting in people connecting to one another?

If it’s clear it’s not, then it’s wasting time and money.

“It’s Complicated”

Complicated

Saying it’s complicated isn’t meant to be an excuse or a way out.

It’s a challenge.

A challenge to simplify; to uncomplicate it; to push through until it’s clear.

Making It So

Making It

One thing is clear about those who add value to a project, bring energy into the room, create something remarkable.

They make it so by getting after it until they do.

It might mean pivoting tactics. It might mean asking for help. It might mean breaking the status quo. But most importantly it means they don’t stop.

Whatever it is they’re after, they make it so.
