The Ground Wire

Street Lamp TIpped Over

With electrical installations, the ground wire provides a conducting path to the earth, preventing a shock from occurring at the unit itself.

It’s not likely you would notice the ground wire is removed, especially if you’re careful with every action you take around the unit.

Our personal ground wires work a bit different.

While our personal ground wires provide the same out as an electrical ground wire, and while they make us feel safe and are there for us to prevent a shock from occurring, we miss them when they’re gone.

The other difference?

The shock they prevent for us is more than just a tiny second of physical pain.

Once you’ve found your ground wire. Hold onto them.

Does Everyone Really Need To Know?

Person Painting

It’s cheap and easy to inform everyone. The power of the internet has helped us there. But it begs the question of if everyone really needs to know about your thoughts, your relationship, your work, your struggles, your celebrations, your shower thoughts and your song lyrics.

That’s not to say no one needs to know, either. I firmly believe every ounce of ourselves we put out in the world can resonate and help someone else move forward in their own life.

But it’s our responsibility to reach the right people with each of our messages. Not everyone. Not no one. But some. Some of those who our work will resonate with.

Until It’s Ready

Working Men Waiting In A Store

There’s no shame in holding off launch until it’s ready, until it’s good enough, until you know you can support it.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you should hide in the shadows until the day comes.

Rather, find ways to get out there early, to test the work, to drive greater awareness of your soon-to-launch idea.

Saying Someone’s Name

Person Playing Foosball With Another

There’s so much power, connectivity and an empathetic bond carried in the air when we say someone’s name.

Thank you, Carly.

See you tomorrow, Jake.

Hey, Ben. How’s today going for you?

All statements that can be said without a name, but you just read them as if they were more personal and more heartfelt – and it’s likely none of those names are yours.

Sure, first step is remembering a person’s name.

But once we know it, we have the responsibility to use it.

Stay Positive & Roll Call

P.S. Asking For A Name Is A Lot Easier Than Avoiding Having To Use It When You Don’t Know It

Thankless

Working Person

Most good work is thankless work. Not completely, but certainly more thankless than any of us doing the meaningful work would have hoped.

That’s why it’s vital to notice the impact you’re making, measure results and give yourself thanks for a job continuously well done.

And when those emails come through or pats on the back do happen, treasure them. By nature they will be few and far between.

Then again, the thanks isn’t why we do the work anyway, is it?
