A community that doesn’t know it’s a community tends to fall apart.

That’s one of the many reasons a leader is needed.

A leader reminds members that they are a team.

A leader communicates to outsiders that there’s a group of strong and connected insiders (and the insiders see this happen).

A leader understands and activates the power of a group instead of its individuals one by one.

Yes, a community needs to feel like a community, but they also need to be reminded.

Two very clear options are available when something goes wrong.

You can be pissed, frustrated, sad and blame someone for it.

Or you can think through how to prevent it from going wrong like that again in the future. (And perhaps help others prevent it from going wrong in their future, too.)

The options are clear.

Imagine how the world we live in would be if everyone followed the statement of “I could do it better” up with actually doing it better?

Doing is what creates the change.

Even if only 10 people show up. Some of those 10 will bring some of their 10 next time and so forth.

But, of course, no one will show up until you do.

It’s easy to find ways to celebrate all that’s around us if we only take the moment to do so.

Often advertising is about bringing one in or getting in front of many so that one-by-one purchases are made. It’s an email to a large group, but only received by one at a time. It’s all 1-1 marketing.

Consider a better form of marketing. The 1-n marketing. The marketing that brings people together.

Invite the board game group in to play together. Start a BIF contest where the winner of a quiz receives a gift and then needs to start a new contest with another gift for all to participate in.

Consider hosting a book club or renting a space to bring passionate social media users together to learn from one another.

What does it look like to go on tour for your profession?

1-1 communications certainly has its place, but if you’re longing for impact and fulfillment, you will have to find ways to bring people together.

You know when you ask someone a question and they run with it?

That’s most people, actually. Especially if you ask the right question.

And while you may feel like they are rambling; they feel like they’re connecting, like you’re empathizing, like they finally have someone to talk to who wants to listen.

It’s a gift of feeling good that we have the ability to provide simply by prompting them.

It doesn’t make sense to keep an empty water bottle and only fill it up when we want/need water.

It doesn’t make sense to have an empty water bottle that we only fill a tiny bit throughout the day.

It doesn’t make sense to go a full day with an empty water bottle, thinking “I’ll fill it tomorrow.”

It doesn’t make sense to keep the empty water bottle out of sight or on the other end of the building.

Far better to fill the bottle in the morning, keep it close, and continue to top it off throughout the day.

We’re no different.
