The only difference between you and a successful author is that someone else wrote a book and another person read it.

What that boils down to is simply action.

Someone did something and someone else did something.

Boiling it down even more is establishing a connection where two stories collide–the one of maker and the one of made for.

There’s no success of any endeavor (not just becoming an author) without actionable generosity for someone who feels like you understand them.

That’s marketing and entrepreneurship and giving a damn in a nut shell.

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression “rocket to success.”

It’s used because the rocket part is a great analogy. Not only does it incorporate ideas around preparedness and determination and science and art, it also highlights gravity in a unique way.

Gravity, in the context of making the change you seek to make in the world, is all of the failure, doubt and uncertainty we feel. It all works its force to pull us down, to stop us from rising.

But like any solid rocket, we must break through that pull and get on with bigger and better things.

Gravity will always be there.

What we choose to continue doing in lieu of that is what really matters.

There’s a lot of work that people consider hard.

They wouldn’t want to do it. It’s uncomfortable. And it’s all just a means to an end.

What’s interesting is that any work can be viewed this way.

The work of a new coffee shop owner can be banal and cookie-cutter.

The work of a customer service rep can be routine and lacking heart.

What’s more interesting is that the opposite can be said for all the work in the world, too.

The work we do can be full of joy when we focus on how to make it meaningful for others.

The work we do can be full of joy if we simply set out to make it so.

Niceties don’t get taken for granted.

They may not get mentioned in a positive review and you may not get thanked for them.

The little details may not get the spotlight or referenced as game changers.

But niceties do get noticed and appreciated, if only slightly.

Consider the situation that there are two similar options a customer can go with. All is quite the same except for one has more niceties, a little more care from the owner. It’s obvious which one will get selected, right?

In a world with competitors all around us, it’s going to be the little things that make the biggest difference.

On the pursuit of something remarkable, you’ll have to put your signature on paper that puts the end goal out of your control

You’ll have to commit to others helping you. You’ll have to sign contracts that put things out of your hands and into others’.

You’ll have to commit to others in order to help them do their job better.

You’re not just signing up for serving an audience. You’re signing up to help others help you help your audience.

It’s a network of signage.

Whether we think we’ve got our emotions turned on or off, they’re being channeled.

When we enter a room, the emotion we’re feeling seeps into others. If we’ve got a positive attitude and a big smile, so will others.

If we enter that room stressed and frustrated, well, those emotions resonate, too.

What many don’t realize is that emotion is channeled through words, pictures, the sound of our voice on the phone and every possible way we can interact with someone (in real life or digitally).

Right now I’m writing with the emotions of seriousness and compassion and care for you, the reader. But I didn’t need to tell you that, I’m sure you feel it.

As such, it’s worth checking every touchpoint your brand has with a customer (and maybe you have with friends) to make sure you’re channeling the emotion you want them to be feeling.

There’s a science to opening a restaurant, a science to being an excellent teacher, a science to being a wife and a science to being an author.

There’s an art to it all, too.

Actually, there’s two types of art to it.

The first type of art is to do the reading, to pick up the book on the science, to thumb through blogs and people’s experience of doing what you want to do. Get creative with where you learn the science.

The second type of art is to do the science you’ve read. It’s not going to be perfect because we all do things in our unique way, but that’s what makes it art. Art is doing.
