When The Work …

People And The Work

Whether the work stops, hiccups, goes full force, needs revisions, was given criticism, wasn’t used for how you intended, wasn’t shared enough, was shared too much, was scrutinized, needs an editor, goes on its own path … there are still people there to help it.

Hard not to be thankful for team members, huh?

Finite Emotion

Finite Emotion

You’re surrounded by people with finite emotion.

They’re fighting their own battles in and outside the environment you’re working with them.

Benefits of the doubt are nice, but helping them out is even nicer.

Perhaps the more we do it, the more the culture will shift and the more others will do it for us.

Because like them, we’ve got finite emotion, too.

The Toughest Work Of Audience Engagement

Audience Engagement

Finding groups and associations and clubs and organizations and tribes is time consuming, but relatively easy.

Deciding if each group is worth reaching out to, if they will care to hear from you, if you have permission to contact them is a little more difficult and a bit more time consuming.

Figuring out what to say is the toughest work of all and the most time consuming. One message can’t resonate with every group. Nor will the same level of empathy resonate with each.

Can you remember the last email you were truly happy to get? It’s been awhile for me, too.

Now think of the groups you’re sending one to.

Four Walls

Four Walls

Any time you put people within four walls, they’ll become a community.

There’s not much hate one has with another when they’re in Trade Joe’s.

Those in a local coffee shop know that everyone around them is studying, socializing or escaping the real world, too.

Similar community-ness can be said for digital environments like Seth Godin’s Marketing Seminar or a metal band’s YouTube channel.

Walls send a signal of inclusion/exclusion, insider/outer, those in cahootz and those not.

If we can be bold enough to design four walls, the possibility of what we can accomplish and create within them becomes endless.

Delayed Apologies

Apologies

When you owe an apology, it’s like a wall is up that prevents you from doing generous work again.

Or maybe it’s a weight that keeps you from getting to the work that’s meaningful.

Or maybe it’s a chain that holds you back from doing something with all of your heart.

An apology that owed doesn’t earn interest, doesn’t allow you to move forward and doesn’t allow the best of your work to shine.

The longer we wait, the taller the wall gets, the heavier the weight, the tighter the chain.

How Much We Do

How You Make An Impact

Very few artists remain known because of how much they did.

A few authors, a couple of painters and maybe an ad guy.

Beyond that, the quantity, the hours and the tallies don’t always add up to a meaningful impact.

But the “how” in what we do often does.

Leaping Entry Level Positions

Caring More

Have you ordered from somewhere that had an excellent delivery-driver and within weeks they were gone?

Most likely, they were promoted.

And they were promoted because they cared.

And it doesn’t take much for people to notice they care (because so few do) and reward them.

Caring is the single most significant attribute that sets the great apart from the not-so-great.

The same can be said for any level position, any line of work, any connection with a club, community or friend.

Care.

That’s all it takes to leap up the ladder.
