Your Sliver

Your Sliver Of Life

There are markets and in markets, segments, and in segments, tribes and in tribes, teams and in teams, there’s a sliver.

When we stop trying to be more than a sliver, life gets easier, we nestle into our place and we do better work.

Back when I tried golfing, I would take the driver and whack at the ball as hard as I could. I wanted to be great. I wanted to impress my friends. I wanted a lot out of hitting a ball.

It wasn’t until I took a deep breath, let the momentum carry the ball and settled into my place that the ball began going the distance.

Effort isn’t a great measurement and force has a role, but not a critical one.

The better kind of effort is the emotional effort. Speaking to people like you. Doing things that feel effortless. Not trying to be more than you are or try impressing all the market.

Focus on your sliver. It’s all you and we need.

Other Parts Of The Story

Parts Of The Story

Curiosity killed the cat, but there is another part of the story.

Satisfaction brought it back.

We can choose to listen to a certain slice of a story and we can choose to tell ourselves only part of a narrative, but it’s short-changing and prevents us making a choice from a place of holistic reasoning.

The story you’re telling yourself right now … there’s another part of it if you choose to notice.

The Details That Matter

Details That Matter

If the detail is causing you anxiety and stress and frustration and disappointment.

It might be worth letting the detail go.

There are other details that matter more.

Ones that involve generosity and others.

Details that bring joy and passion and a shared experience.

About The Team

Support Your Team

Do they have everything they need?

Are they inspired enough to choose your project over another?

Is there a member that’s bringing the team down?

Are they fueled (literally and imaginatively)?

Do they know the deadline?

Do they trust one another?

Most work isn’t about you and it’s not about one person.

The great work, anyway.

The Kind Of Caring More That Matters

How To Care More

You might care more than the person who did X before you.

You might have more passion, researched more and got more eyeballs on you, but it’s unlikely the market, the audience, the spectators will care.

What they’re looking for is someone who cares so much that they’re willing to put themselves out on the edge to do something different.

The same magic trick gets old, no matter how passionately you do it.

A Different Kind Of Crisis Plan

Crisis Planning

I think of a crisis as something that happens that puts the eyes of a massive audience all on you.

Typically, it occurs when something doesn’t go right.

I’d argue that a plan needs to be crafted for when things go beyond right.

How do you and your organization respond/react when things go far better than projected, when a proposal happens in your venue, when a famous person stops in, when a staff member saves a customer’s life?
