How To Pick Yourself

Picking Yourself

If you’re like me, you don’t like waiting.

Waiting in line, waiting for a package to arrive and especially not waiting to get picked.

After plenty of trial and error, the best way (so far) that I’ve found to pick yourself (beyond, you know, deciding to) is to connect with as many people relevant to what you want.

Doing so has all the guise of them picking you, but in reality it’s all your doing.

You’re In Business

Idea Business

There are a lot of different businesses you could be in.

Manufacturing, cosmetic, beverage, ma and pa automotive repair, and so on.

The business many forget they are in, though, is the idea business.

The business of generating fresh thoughts that connect with the target, contribute to the community and elevate the industry.

World may run on Dunkin’, but your business runs on ideas (whether they are ones that have legs or not).

The Target’s Book

Target's Book

Everyone who leads a tribe that you might one day want to market to has written a book.

You’ll find a book on what it’s like to play competitive Magic The Gathering and what it’s like being a long haul truck driver. You’ll find a book on those who travel solely to see road side attractions and a book on amateur home lawn care.

Books are one of the greatest gateways into a target’s life.

Turns out you don’t need a huge development fund at work to get closer to the target.

A library card will do, and they’re typically free.

Specific Messages

Specifics

Every medium begs you to change your message.

Fit the shoe. Fit the medium. Fit the target’s desire in this moment and space.

Regardless of having an all-encompassing brand message, you need to be tuned into the platform or distribution or space that you’re sharing it.

You need the right message in the right place at the right time, every time.

To not do so will lead you to be forgotten.

The More People Impact

Tribe Building

The best tech, apps and software get better when more people use it.

Facebook, DragonSoul, Unsplash, Snapseed.

The same can be said for many businesses, too–the one’s that build a community are often the strongest, most profitable and longest-lasting.

Subaru, Mobcraft, Basecamp, Firefox.

It’s worth asking if your brand gets better when more people come together. If the answer is yes, then are you making every decision with the focus being on building that community?

Shiny objects don’t build communities, they build cults and cults fade away quickly.

All It Can Handle

All You Have To Give

We know you have more to give. More magic, passion and cleverness.

There tends to be two options when you feel like you want to make a greater impact at work.

Either you leave to start something new or you find a way to assign yourself a new project at your current work that can handle all that you have to give.

You don’t always need to quit and start something new, but you can’t expect others to offer you the chance to give something your all.

What’s On The Menu

Find Your What

It’s an on demand world out there, but it doesn’t need to be.

Although it’s far easier to order off the menu, is easier the point?

Far more fun (and often more successful) to make your own menu.

Craft work that’s never done before, give more than ever has been offered, provide more value than what can be described in a couple short sentences.

Far better to create your “what” and find a “how” than it is to offer what you already know how to.
