First Step To Better Work

Imagine Your Way

Work that’s five, ten or twenty times stronger than the work you’ve done might be hard to do.

How, then, to make it easier … more approachable?

Imagine it.

You can imagine what the work would be like if it was twice as good, now double it. And again.

You’ll be surprised to find that the quickest way to getting to better work (and the best first step to it) is to imagine you can, imagine what it would look like, imagine the possibility.

Once it’s real in your mind, it’s not far from reality.

Deserved Service

Brand Service

As a brand, you’ve got a lot of power.

Power to serve, power to bend the rules, power to give more than expected.

However, just because you have the power to decide who to serve, how to serve and when to serve, it doesn’t mean you need to exercise it on a case-by-case basis or when the problem speaks to you or if your competitor acts in one way.

It might actually be better to use your power to show that everyone who reaches out to you deserves your service.

Picking and choosing when to go the extra mile for a customer isn’t what helps in the long haul; it’s showing up consistently that matters.

This Or That

Right Choices

Best or easy?

Work hard or work smart?

Instant gratification or long haul satisfaction?

Fast or with purpose?

These are the decisions we have to make every day and multiple times per day. Don’t let the grind or lack of willpower stop you from making the right ones.

Multiple Arms

Brand Extensions

It’s worth pushing your brand (personal or not) by considering how many other arms can extend from the core reason the brand exists.

Can a manufacturer become a magazine producer? Can a SEO guru put together a webinar and certification program? Can the brewery craft a line of fresh shirt designs?

The brands that make it through the clutter are the ones who stretch themselves, but with intention and relation to their soul purpose.

How To Pick Yourself

Picking Yourself

If you’re like me, you don’t like waiting.

Waiting in line, waiting for a package to arrive and especially not waiting to get picked.

After plenty of trial and error, the best way (so far) that I’ve found to pick yourself (beyond, you know, deciding to) is to connect with as many people relevant to what you want.

Doing so has all the guise of them picking you, but in reality it’s all your doing.

You’re In Business

Idea Business

There are a lot of different businesses you could be in.

Manufacturing, cosmetic, beverage, ma and pa automotive repair, and so on.

The business many forget they are in, though, is the idea business.

The business of generating fresh thoughts that connect with the target, contribute to the community and elevate the industry.

World may run on Dunkin’, but your business runs on ideas (whether they are ones that have legs or not).

The Target’s Book

Target's Book

Everyone who leads a tribe that you might one day want to market to has written a book.

You’ll find a book on what it’s like to play competitive Magic The Gathering and what it’s like being a long haul truck driver. You’ll find a book on those who travel solely to see road side attractions and a book on amateur home lawn care.

Books are one of the greatest gateways into a target’s life.

Turns out you don’t need a huge development fund at work to get closer to the target.

A library card will do, and they’re typically free.
