How You’re Treated

Do The Work

To be respected as a brewmaster, you can’t just build one recipe, you must have brewed… a lot. You must have done the reading. You have to dump a lot of beer to earn the respect of a brewmaster.

To be recognized as a writer, you can’t just put a book out into the world. You have to show up and write daily. Attend writing workshops, submit for writing awards, and teach others.

Similar investments are needed for musicians, speech therapists, PAs, and pro billiard players.

To change (improve) how you’re treated in your industry, you have to put in the work, do the reading and share the learnings.

As Seth has written time and time again, if you haven’t done the reading, why expect to be treated as a professional?

Eventually

Eventually

Eventually people will get tired of looking stupid for buying the cheap product and will invest in the premium or luxury kind (yours?).

Eventually people will notice when you show up every single day.

Eventually the art you create will stand for something.

When eventually arrives, then what?

Sell premium because you care about value. Show up because you care. Keep creating because there’s a change you seek to make in the world. Don’t do these things just for the “eventually.”

Uncontrollable Changes

Adapting To Change

When the world throws you a curve ball, unprovoked, do you complain and resist or do you figure out how to adapt?

It doesn’t do any good to handle one uncontrollable change one way and the next uncontrollable change another way.

Loving What You Do

Loving What You Do

I’ve come across two types of people who say they love what they do.

There’s the person who fakes it to make it. She convinces herself that she loves what she does. You can’t argue that she doesn’t love what she does, but you can pick up on signs that she has to work to love it.

The other person? Love for the work comes naturally. It’s not about listing all the reasons they love it; it’s about wholeheartedly  and genuinely saying “There’s nothing I don’t love about what I do.”

It’s worth confirming that you truly fall in the latter group.

Complaints About Price

Value Perception

When you hear a complaint about price, it’s not an absolute value problem you have, it’s a perception value.

Lowering prices is a race to the bottom, and a quick one at that.

Explaining the value of your product or service is an uphill battle, but far more valuable to customers.

There’s A Line

The Line

Isn’t there always?

A line you need to cross, that if you don’t, then it implies you didn’t try hard enough, give enough, care enough.

A line you don’t want to cross, that if you do then it implies you tried too hard, gave too much, cared more than enough.

The lie we tell ourselves is that there’s a space between. And that begs the question: If there isn’t space between, are you better off crossing or not crossing the line?

Unmet Needs And Immediate Desires

Instant Gratificaiton And Unmet Needs

Instant gratification is a struggle for most. That’s why services and products are hot for a moment and gone tomorrow.

Instant gratification isn’t about what happened yesterday or what will be desired tomorrow or a year from now; it’s the feeling of needing something now, today, in the moment.

Of course, a business can’t sustain itself this way, yet so many try to jump on every bandwagon that presents itself–an exhaustive hustle of providing momentary satisfaction rather than meeting a real need for the customer.

The next fidget spinner that comes to market, consider what the real need of the person playing with it has. After all, those who lean into instant gratification are the ones who aren’t having needs fulfilled.
