Why Reading Garth’s Blog Benefits You

Aside from the spectacular content. I am always switching things up, I am always offering different and new information; all, of course, to help you in life in a variety of ways.

I mentioned on the side by my gravatar about how adversity is rarely spoken about and that is where you can truly benefit from reading this blog. I keep you continuously surprised at what type of content you will be in-taking each day. Sure, I could get a lot more followers by having a common trend, a single niche of content every day. Fortunately, I know that I am impacting you much more than those who provide habitual content. To produce content that correlates with your routine is the last goal any blogger should have.

I want to break the routine, break the status quo, break your traditional thought processes throughout the day. See it as this: at work you have a task that you have to do every day, and you generally handle it the same way. But from time to time, you run into a speed bump and at first you are hesitant, but after you think it through and overcome the setback, how do you feel? Accomplished, powerful, recognized, achieved, you did something , accomplished something, subconsciously it makes you feel like you deserve that raise you have been wanting a little bit more. That feeling you get after you overcome adversity and accomplish something, that is the feeling I am after and that is why my blog benefits you.

WORK: The Big Picture

This post is to be read during the rough work days and before the end of difficult work days. Read Time: 30 seconds

Never get aggravated, emotional, negative or bring home any resentment from work again.

Notice how small everything is in the picture. Especially work. I bet it took you some time to find it.

Remember that your work is a very small piece in a very large picture called life.

You could lose your job but you will be fine. You could mess a task up but you will be fine. Work is only work when you focus on it, but when you view the bigger picture… that fact that unless you are dying, you really can’t say you’re having a rough day.

The Big Picture: Life goes on, and it keeps going on. It does not stop to complain about the bad job you did or to get upset with how much work there is still left to do or how long it will take to do it. It goes on, unbiased, undaunted. If life goes on, why shouldn’t you?

Paulo Coelho: How I write. Reader: How Do You Write?

Paulo Coelho 2010

Less then a week ago I finished The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It was serendipitous when I checked Tim Ferriss’s blog and saw his post: Paulo Coelho: How I Write

I have since followed Paulo on Facebook and Twitter and am continually inspired and ignited with a worldly creative vibe. I thought, as writer to writer’s, I would re-blog Tim’s post and offer my own advice. In doing so, I hope to set a chain reaction off for other readers and writers that admire Paulo’s writing and style to give their input. I want to read the answers to the questions below from other people because I know that if they are followers of Paulo or Tim, then I know they are destined for some unnatural form of significance. Directly below is the recording of Paulo answering the questions that follow the recording.

If the recording does not show up for you, follow this link

From Tim Ferriss’s blog: I will answer the interview questions.

– When on deadline, what is the first thing you do in the morning? What does your daily schedule look like? Do you take any days off, and what determines if you’ve had a “successful” writing day?

Garth:
Work is what I do months before a deadline and days right before it. Writing for entertainment is what occupies my time in between. In this sense, I am clearly stating that I love to have things accomplished far before a deadline. So the work I do months before the deadline is the collaboration of ideas, organization and understanding of my focus and goals for what I am writing. The work I do the few days before the deadline is when I blow the readers mind. I have always said that I work best under pressure and it still stands true. Stress for me, opens up this sector of imagination in my brain that nothing else will unlock. As for the time in between these fragments, this is when I write creatively for various segments of my overall project. To break it down,

A daily schedule months before the deadline: Waking up and eating a healthy breakfast at the computer as I do research before my writing. Then I go to my “I’d rather be writing” job where I brainstorm and take notes that pop into my mind. As soon as work is finished I am back at the computer working endlessly on planning, set up and having a lot of free writing sessions. I’ll typically exercise at least 6 days a week for a break from staring at the computer monitor and restarting the system.

A daily schedule in between the start and deadline: Waking up and eating healthy breakfast, light music, reading some blog posts and then some fiction. Going to my “I’d rather be writing job” and relaxing, not specifically focusing on the writing task. This is when I start to have more wonderful life experiences that I could incorporate into my writing and I write when the vibe is highest and the flow as unstoppable.

A daily schedule days before the deadline: Wake up and write, eat, write, work, write, eat, write, exercise, write, write, and write. Some of my strongest writing is written very late at night while I am flowing between the dream world and reality. I will have a post out on this particular topic within a few days.

To me, a successful day of writing occurs in two ways. The first is when I have written 5 or more segments, or chapters if you will. The second form of success is when I spend an hour and a half creating one of the greatest segments of the overall project and the rest of the day is left to churn new concepts and experience life to inspire new ideas for future segments.

I have to be half-corn-half-cheese and say that I do not take any days off. I am known for always carrying a book and a notebook around with me everywhere I go. I look for ideas to write about in everything I do.

– How do you capture ideas that might be helpful in your writing? These days, what software and tools do you use for writing?

Garth:

On the go, I use a notepad on my phone.

At any events or meetings, I bring my journal to write in.

When I am at the computer, I have a word document always open to write in, I call it “Infinity Works”.

At work or any other place, I write on sticky notes or whatever it is I can find.

I have tried phone apps, and software help like Evernote but none of them seem to satisfy me. I like to keep it all simple and easily able to manipulate my writing.

– How much of your books do you visualize/outline upfront vs. writing organically piece-by-piece? In other words, how much of the story arc have you decided before you start writing?

Garth:

As stated before, I visualize the organization and types of stories and points I want to incorporate into my work, but the segments themselves, I write organically based off the idea I set for it. The greatest part about writing this way is that it allows you to maintain an open mind for fresh ideas. Imagine writing something that has been completely thought out. How do you expect to create additional originality?

– What are the most common mistakes that you see first-time novelists making? Most common weaknesses?

Garth:

Since I am a first-time novelist, I can only speak for myself. One of the most common mistakes I began making was that I would critique myself over and over in order to write what I know the audience would want to read instead of finding a balance between what it is the audience wants to read and what the audience could read and feel my passion inside each word.

– Do you base your characters on real people? Why or why not? If not, how do you develop those characters?

Garth:

Whether we realize it or not, what we write is based off our experiences. So either our characters are based off of real people directly, or they are based off parts of real people that we have come in contact with in our lives. Personally, I air on the non-fictional side of people because I want people to make connections to my fictional characters and think to themselves how similar the character is to someone they know.

– What are the 2-3 things you personally find most invigorating or helpful when you’re stuck or feel stagnated with writing/ideas? Do you have a team of any type (researchers, etc.) who help you?

Garth:

There are three tactics I take until I stop for the day and wait for the next to continue writing. The first is to have music on. Currently it is “And Then There Were None” that I can listen to and for some reason, it increases my energy, doubles my positive aura and triples my creative thinking process. I think it’s a great idea to find some music that can get you motivated and that will create a barrier by preventing any distracting thoughts to come in. By having music on, your mind is taking up only the music you are listening to and the focus you have on your writing. Without the music you are subject to random thoughts, any noise distractions and you are no longer forced to focus harder on your writing.  The second tactic is exercise, for some this could be confused with cleaning, which may or may not be a good thing. Regardless, there is nothing like burning your physical energy to leave the majority of your mind to focus. After a workout, you are too tired to want to do anything else but sit down, so you might as well write! Tim, I am sure would second that. The third tactic is to read some fiction that relates to the topic you are stuck on. Get an idea of what others think, even if it does not help with your particular writers block, it will create ideas for future segments, thus preventing future stagnation.

Tuning To Encouragement

I am recalling a quote I once read so that you can end the pity party, funk, or down mood that you may be in now. The quote goes as follows.

“It is all right to sit on your pity pot every now and again. Just be sure to flush when you are done.” – Author Unknown

With that note, I am going to encourage you to flush now, and flush every morning after today so you can begin each day fresh and with a new outlook on life. We all have times that we forget to flush, but in recent years it seems that more and more people do not flush at all. The lack of encouragement for a positive day, of a successful business trip, of a great day at school or work, of a spectacular weekend, of being more prosperous, of getting healthier, of having balance, and so much more, has made our world into a negative place. As in all negative situations, we have a hard time of getting what we want. Why? Because we live in a world that lacks encouragement!

Why do we not encourage others?

1. WIIFM

Each and every one of us at some point turns on WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) and we forget to tune it back to WIIFThem (What’s In It Them). Every day, we wake up to WIIFThem but even before breakfast we feel that people are blaming us or attacking us, so we switch back to WIIFM. In doing so we ignore others, we retreat, we begin to avoid people. We go at life on our own channel, oblivious of the positive power of others. We forget that of which we put out in the world, we receive. We forget to look at the successful people in the world who live by encouragement.

2. We do not know how to encourage others.

Have you ever searched for inspirational or motivational quotes? You find a whole list, pages and pages, of quotes and you begin reading them one after the other. Possibly by the third or fourth quote, you feel it. You feel this sudden build up of happiness, positivity, will, and the strength to go at the day with all you got. You got the power! That particular quote created a spark in your circuit board and turned you closer to WIIFThem. What you felt, is encouragement.

We have never been trained to encourage others because we have never been taught to understand the different channels, languages, and perspectives other people are on. The best way to learn is through trial and error.

Before I share with you different methods of encouragement, I am going to have to ask you to please flush and tune into WIIFThem.

Steps for Encouragement:

–          Begin with those closest to you.

–          Be aware of what effects and encourages you. Ex. Share the quote that you felt so empowering with your friends and family.

–          Instead of giving others reasons why they cannot, give them reasons why they can.

–          Be there for others. Really, just be there. More often than not, we do not see how much we affect others who care about us. We do not realize this because they are commonly on WIIFM. By just being there, in their presence, know that you are encouraging them.

–          Ask for help even when you do not need it. To be near you and involved in something that you are working on is a great form of encouragement. Too often we forget how much the little things matter and how greatly they affect others in a positive way.

–          Most importantly, tell people who have encouraged you that you are grateful. When a person realizes they have this magnificent power, they will use it more frequently.

What are ways you encourage others?

By encouraging others you are tuning them into WIIFThem. By doing so, you are causing a ripple effect in the world. Let’s make this world a more positive one; you have the power to be the world changer. Remember, what you send out in the world is what others AND yourself receive.

Life’s Lottery and The First Step To Winning It All

Reading Time: 3 minutes

There are 2 factors I want to go over. The first factor is the fact I want you to know that I understand how difficult it is to find what you are most passionate about. I know how it feels to want to do everything like becoming a hippie, becoming a UFC fighter, getting a college degree, becoming a vegan, becoming a lawyer, making a million, doing something life risking and the hundred other things you would love to do!

It was roughly two weeks before I created this website that I had my “what is the point of my life” breakdown. I was crashing and having mood swings because I wanted to do so many things. Side note: I might have mentioned it before, but I have over 250 life goals written down, and I have just as many passions. How could a person be happy when they are trying to walk on 250 paths at the same time? They can’t.

It was just last night that my friend was having a mental explosion only to realize that she does not know who she truly is. She wants to do so many things and it makes her feel lost and discouraged that she can’t commit.

I mean, Hermione Granger couldn’t even handle all the different classes she was taking at Hogwarts, even with a Time Turner!

A few weeks ago I had a deep conversation with my brother where he revealed one of the biggest reasons why he has not reached any degree of success or real happiness. He said “I just have too many interests”.

While I point out that the reason we run into this mental tumult is from the lack of commitment, do not think it is the lack of commitment to one path.

The Pick Three

There is an Illinois lottery game called “Pick Three”. Life is like the lottery and the best way to win is to….

you guessed it! PICK THREE!

She could definitely handle and prosper in becoming a certified personal trainer, a fitness model and a nutritionist.

My focus on this website is to advance my writing skills about life, to share my public speaking experiences and to provide information on the relationship between fitness and whole life balance (includes Parkour, my favorite).

Hermione Granger would certainly rule Arithmancy, Charms, and Herbology.

Personally, I know what the top three interests my brother could conquer that would require him to use all of his heart – He could become the greatest new age artist, one of the best skateboard instructors and a pretty awesome military nut.

The point is that we do not need to make a commitment to one thing in our lives. Nor can we completely focus on more than three passions. We are only humans, we do have limits. But, for some reason it’s a paradox, because when we limit ourselves, we become unlimited.

The First Step To Living Your Passion(s)

The second factor is the first step to doing what you love.  There will definitely be a time when you get to do one, two, or all three of the things you are most passionate about.

But for now, the first step to doing what you love is to create a purpose for what you do now – regardless if it is your passion or not.

I don’t particularly have an interest in my data entry job, regardless of the fact I can type 109+ words per minute, my highest ever being 149. But I changed my views and perspectives around to appreciate what I do. I created a work motto that incorporates why I am passionate about my job despite the fact I would like to be doing something else. It is this attitude that has allowed me to create a closer relationship with my coworkers, to be asked to apply for promotional position in the organization and to now be given more time and money to do the things I am truly passionate about.

The great part of this, is that it does not matter your current work position. By applying this attitude, you are making a secret path to do what it is you would really love to do.

Review

First Factor: As humans, focusing on one path in life will either lead us to boredom or a regret for not doing more. Also as humans, focusing on 25 different paths in life will burn us out or we will never follow anything through to the end. The winning number to life’s lottery is 3: Pick three passions. This will allow you to commit until the end because you will have enough energy and it will be enough variety so that you will always be excited and energized.

Second Factor: The first step and the best way to start living one or all three of your first set of passions is to find a purpose in your current career path. Has anyone ever told you that you can’t love another until you learn to love yourself? Well, you can’t live your passion until you find a passion in what you are currently doing. Whether you have to create a motto for the job you have now or simply remind yourself of the “good parts” of your job, I guarantee that with this new attitude, you will be living the passions you want in less than 6 months.

Stay Positive and FYI, The Pick Three Lottery Averages $500,000, But I Am Sure You Will Be Acquiring A Lot More

Poetry Night 011

Yet the World Still Moves On

Soaring to the outskirts of the demands being made,

In this world by suffocating gentlemen shaking hands but not getting paid.

The relevance of what lies below makes no sense to them,

As if any transcendence to the most fathomable possibilities were slow,

And the camera can take snapshot after snapshot on the go.

Still the blank canvas creeps to such an alternative degree.

That even if the light above your head flashed, you still could not see.

The depravities of the self-less inner case,

Cannot be transferred unless a whole is cut through the base,

The prescribed perception only lies.

And some people dance and some people die.
