Right To Or Need To

Many people speak up when they feel they’re right.

Other people speak up when they feel they need to.

Sometimes those who feel the need are right.

But it’s the need to speak that moves people.

Telling someone they’re wrong and you’re right will only piss them off.

Telling someone what you need to; that changes people.

Wall Smudge

There’s not a wall near wherever you’re reading this right now that doesn’t have some small blemish.

Interesting to think how we don’t waste time patching up the blemishes every day and instead we carry and live on with our purpose.

Even more interesting to think how we do that just fine, but when it comes to our work or passion project, we spend more time finding and removing the smudges instead of doing the work that matters.

Certainly if the color of the wall is completely different than you or your guests want, then change it.

But that smudge?

Reveal Your Secrets

Share your ideas and you might get asked to lead the execution of them.

Share your thoughts and they might act on them and you can learn from how they did it to do it better yourself.

Reveal your secrets and more can benefit.

Showcase your thinking and you might just raise the industry average.

So much good can come from showing your cards. Far more good than the bad concerns and worries your lizard brain makes up when it tries to convince you to keep them to yourself.

Someone might steal your idea? Good. Let’s see what they can do with it and then what you can do to make it better still.

Slightly Different

Providing service that’s slightly different than expectations can be a good thing.

When you apply for a project, you might find out that it’s slightly different than you thought – which can be a good thing.

The new way you’re being taught is slightly different than how you previously learned, but it’s better.

There are two takeaways here.

One is that nuance matters in doing better work.

Two is that there are opportunities for you in everything because no matter what you pursue, it will be slightly different than what you envisioned going in.

It all matters how you look at it.

Why Do People Take On So Much?

Because they give a damn.

Because they like the feeling of fulfillment at the end of the day.

Because they want to keep the community they’re involved in feeling cared for.

Because they keep finding time to do more once they set out to do more.

Because people are naturally storytellers and the more you do, the more stories you have to share.

Dancing With It

It’s not easy to let go of the thoughts that prevent you from growing your idea, passion or business.

I’d argue you shouldn’t. Far better than letting go is to dance with it.

Acknowledge that things will be different as you grow in size; others you put in leadership positions will have a different style than you; you might lose some of your tribe.

Once we accept those are a given, we can work with them rather than have them working against us.

Brands can’t grow standing still.

Feeling Involved

If there’s the option to help someone feel involved in a project, it’s best to lean into it.

The lizard brain in us will say that we should let them be; they’re busy; they won’t care like we care; they’ve got enough on their plate… and so on.

But the reality is, many people leave positions, quit jobs, pivot to other hobbies and communities and organizations because of the lack of feeling involved in them.
