Initiating Scared

Scared, Change Your LifeIt’s really quite simple. Just come up with a way to change something in your life, large or small. Are you going to drink more water each day this year? Are you planning to make a big move later this year? Are you wanting to write more on your blog this year?

There’s a lot you can do that is easy this year, but nothing is easier than initiating scared, so why not do it?

Do something easy so you can focus more on doing something that’s difficult, say, perhaps, overcoming scared?

By doing something easy, you create more time to focus on setting your expectations for the difficult, on building confidence for the difficult, on actually doing the difficult.

Nothing Works. Really, It Does.

No post lined up for today.

No great ideas today either. Good ones, but not great.

So instead of writing about a good idea. I’m choosing nothing. Because when people expect great and all you have is good, nothing is a better choice.

There’s overselling (1), underselling (2) and not selling at all (3).

Now rank them in their importance to you.

Where Do You Place The Fear

line

I see again and again the fear being placed first. It’s on the front of their minds, tip of their tongues, top of their lists. The result? Nothing gets created. No movement.

Then there’s the ones who place the fear in the middle, right smack dab in the middle of their efforts, inevitably halting progress. Remember the last thing that was half-finished? Better yet, simply started but never completed? That’s because you put the fear in the middle.

The best place to put fear is at the end, I think. Don’t throw it away. Don’t ignore it. Dance with it, but after the work is done.

Lessons And Reflections From Krypton Course #001

If you didn’t know, Seth Godin and his team created the Krypton Community College over the summer of 2013. The gist: get together with people to discuss, learn and create together. (Here’s the link to the first course Krypton Course #001 Go: How to Overcome Fear, Pick Yourself, & Start a Project that Matters)

The following are lessons and reflections I thought it was necessary to share.

Week one

1. You don’t need a huge group. My team started with a total of two students and one organizer. Then it dwindled to one student and one organizer. It only takes two to tango.

2. Everyone has similar fears. But they won’t believe that statement until someone speaks up and shares their fears.

3. Fear can be narrowed down to either fear of embarrassment or fear of injury. Surprisingly, people would rather risk injury than risk embarrassment. Wow.

4. Fear – the 20 second rule

Week two

1. You can plan (not set) a path for creating projects that add up to a valuable portfolio of experiences. There’s a middle ground between setting something up and allowing for complete spontaneity. Find that sweet spot.

2. Finding your edge is crucial for success. You can’t find it alone, though.

3. Feel free to read Start Schooling Dreams.

Week three

1. Committment means something different for everyone.

2. Not everything you create should be shared. Not everything you create should be kept secret. Make time for what you keep private, make more time for what you share.

3. As the famous Hugh MacLeod said, “Ignore everybody.”

4. Let what you create and share go. You’re better off creating something else, something new. Once you deliver something, detach yourself from it and go make something else remarkable.

5. Success is not a straight line. (obvious, but worth mentioning again)

Week four

1. If you’re going to share your project idea with someone, make sure they have a project idea to share with you too. Sharing your idea with someone who doesn’t have one leaves you with everything to lose. Sharing your project idea with someone who has a project idea too leaves both of you with everything to gain. (I can’t fully explain the dynamic. You will have to trust me on this one without a long explanation.)

2. You’re going to talk about your project idea and get excited. Make a conscious decision beforehand that you will use that excitement for action and not settle at just talking about it. This is the most difficult part of the entire course.

The Real Shortage

Shortage

There are thousands of ideas on how to make life easier, there are thousands of ideas of how to make day-to-day actions more fun or aesthetic, there are thousands of ideas on how to fix government, how to fix the water shortage, thousands of ideas for businesses, books, songs, houses, cars, tractors, buildings, etc,.

When you think to yourself “Can’t they think of a better idea.”

I would bet a thousand that they have.

The shortage isn’t of ideas; the shortage is of action, of execution, of application.

It’s not that people are stupid. It’s that they are afraid.

They Are All Lies

Lies that you tell yourself after seeing someone being successful or remarkable:

They were born with more talent than me

They are fearless

I can’t make the same committment that they make

They have more time than me

They don’t have to worry about x, y, or z like I do

I would have to get into Harvard if I wanted to end up like them

It’s so easy for them

They’ve had all the support from the beginning

They never fail

How I Do It (personal)

1277731_710353942311779_430859577_o

About six months ago, someone really close to me asked me how I do all that I do?

That wasn’t the first time I was asked; almost anyone that cares enough to hear my story and ask what I’m up to ends up also asking me how I do all that I do.

And here is what I figured out this morning (six months after truly being asked how I do all that I do):

I am willing to invest my time in doing something that might not pay off.

That’s all it comes down to.

I used to be ignorant and think that people didn’t want to be successful, that they would come up with excuse after excuse to not become successful (including not knowing what success is to them).

Really it’s that they (you?) don’t want to invest the time in doing something that might not pay off. That scares the shit out of us.

So that’s how I do all that I do. And if you want a piece of advice on how to invest time in doing something that might not pay off? Decide that you want it more than you’re afraid of it failing.
