Using Facts To Sell

Some businesses are still stuck on facts.

They think if they throw more facts at their target audience, they’ll see more profit. They believe few are buying their product because they don’t understand the facts about things like filtered water.

These businesses are leaders of power point. They want their bullet points. They believe stats are the most persuasive form of proof, of conversion.

All these folks are really story killers. They’re producers of analysis paralysis.

They strip the voice, the passion, and the emotions of a campaign because that content covers up the facts. For them, it’s rational over intuition.

The solution to working with them isn’t to get upset because they don’t understand marketing. Nor is the solution to just do it the way they want. (That degrades the credibility of marketing.)

Better to work on a second story: the one your telling the business for the target audience.

It’s more work. It’s harder to convince a business to change their mindset about their product than it is to convert a stranger into a friend who buys. Ultimately worth it to be part of a business that begins using marketing to its full potential and a real highlight to be part of the reason people listen to the business.

Building Intuition

Sure, I won’t argue that intuition in some cases comes naturally. You can follow your intuition when lost in the woods or playing a game of chess. However, you can also build your intuition.

Go hiking enough, your intuition becomes a combination of gut feeling and a recognition of signs. A chess player stated, “If I notice a piece is out-of-place (recalling a similar position from my subconscious memory), I’ll adjust my thought process appropriately and evaluate my options. All of this behavior related to pattern recognition is collectively known as a chess player’s intuition.”

I don’t rely on intuition. I rely on building it. And when it fails me, that only means I haven’t experienced enough. Cool thing is, failure is experience.

What Comes After “The Next Big Thing”

Awesome. Now what’s next?

I noted yesterday that the more you know, the more original you can be and in being original, with a bit of intuition, you can create the next big thing.

(As I was writing this, a commercial came on for the new galaxy SIII and the final words on the screen were “The Next Big Thing Is Here”.)

What’s after that then? What are your plans now that you made the next big thing? So you made an awesome book-page-open-holder or you found a way to connect the photos taken from one person’s phone with all the other friends immediately after taking it. Now what?

You have two options.

1. You can cash out and do your best to make the money last.

2. You can use the cash from your creation to start working on the next big thing.

One decade ago choosing number one was viable. Not only would you make a lot of money from creating the next big thing, but it would be a long time before the next big thing trumped yours and cut your cash flow.

But in a world that people are making something bigger and better than the person next to them every day, option one just isn’t an option anymore.

That leaves option two. And option two takes dedication, creativity and more hard work as you invent more of the next big things. Which is perfect not just for your tribe, but for your passion, for your income, for your life and the world we live in.

This idea, this concept, this law that guides what is successful couldn’t be a better one for us. It ignores those who only create something that is cheap, that is an imitation, that is only meant to fulfill option one and that has no art in it.

Doing What You Think People Will Frown Upon

It was awhile ago when I raised my hand in my Poetry 101 class and asked if we could bring in our own work and read it to the class for extra credit. (Weird that was something I had to ask isn’t it?) The teacher hesitantly agreed only after the class followed suit in making quite the ruckus for approval. The day came and I risked going up to the podium and reading a love poem I had written – but this isn’t about me. It’s about someone else who got up and took a much larger risk than ridicule.

The whole class was smiling, laughing and as I remember it, a few people stood up giving a standing ovation to the girl who did what you may think people would have frowned upon. Now, I never curse or swear on this website (though I may let some words slip in life), let it be known that I am merely going to pick out words that were in this young lady’s poem.

Imagine the following words put into one of the most heart wrenching and fluent poetry you have ever heard: “fu#k”, “w@ore”, “s%it”, “c*nt”, “b^tch” and a few others.

The reaction of ecstatic approval from the classroom made me think how happy it makes people to hear and see other people do what most would frown upon. This lady didn’t risk ridicule, she risked isolation, she risked the repercussions of fighting back the status-quo and following her intuition and heart.

To my surprise, she was congratulated for an epic non-standard performance and begged to share more of her poetry. She sat down with the largest grin on her face, larger than a silver Waning Crescent of a moon turned sideways.
