Steal Like An Artist

Dance To The Song Of Artists

February 6, 2015February 9, 2015Garth Beyer

Web Noise, Find A Signal

It’s easy to say no, to object to proposal, to open the exit door when put in an uncomfortable situation. No just needs one reason. And there are so many reasons to say no. Few to say yes.

It’s easy to free ride, to ask someone for two dollars to ride the bus, to download music, to take content others put out there and dub it your own. There are so many ways to steal. But few steal like an artist. It’s hard work.

It’s easy to get lost in the noise of the web, easy to miss an opportunity because we’re entertained with the latest drama, easy to shout about what’s not working. There’s so much pull on our attention. Few choose to filter out the noise, to seek out the music.

What reassures me and intrigues me is the people who muster up the courage to say yes, who steal like an artist, who search for the signal, the whisper, the song instead of the noise, are so much happier and more successful than those who don’t.

Everybody Steals

October 19, 2013November 24, 2013Garth Beyer

There are two types of theft. The first is taking something that is not yours and keeping it. This should have consequences.

The second type of theft is taking something that is not yours (most often an idea) and building on it. This should have incentives.

I have a friendly reminder each day when I wake up that “Everybody steals”  (see picture above). Some days I even feel encouraged by it. We can’t be focused on creating something entirely new just based off what is already in our heads. We have to take what isn’t ours and experiment with it.

Ownership has a lot less to do with what one has and more to do with what they do with it.

Nothing’s Original

December 12, 2012Garth Beyer

but is that a good reason to not follow through?

Terrible Reasons To Not Follow Through:

– Someone else has done it already

– It sounds too much like another persons idea

– Your afraid it will end up looking like someone elses concoction

It’s an easy excuse not to ship something, not to follow through with an idea for fear of it being too much like someone else’s. However, that is even a greater reason to complete your project. Why wouldn’t you create something that’s similar to what you already know works and is a success?

Take for example the original comb, dating back over 5,000 years. Then innovators (most likely with some gruesome hair styles) ended up making the comb in different styles to accommodate different people. They stole like an artist.

So what if your idea feels too much like someone else’s. Either you will find a way for it to stand out or you will feel like the next Fonz. We don’t laugh at people for dressing up like him, we laugh with them.
