Episode 9: Referees, Fear x2, Haters And More – Podcast

On this episode of In The Box Podcast, we both thought we were covering a topic so there’s two times the fear talk, as well as discussion around what inspires something to become a referee, why white people riot, how to deal with haters and why working from home is a poor decision. Enjoy.

Episode 9: Referees, Fear x2, Haters, Working From Home And More

Referees – What inspires someone to become a referee?

White people + riots – Why do white people riot after their sports teams lose?

Fear – If you could give someone one tip on how to not live from a place of fear, what would it be?

Fear x2 – What was the last thing you were afraid of? Did you overcome it? How? If you didn’t, why not?

Haters – How do you deal with haters?

Working From Home – Do you think people should be able to work from home?

Fuel To Your Flame

Fuel To Your Flame

Imagine if you had the control to throw anything you wanted into a fire and it would burn.

A rock. Water. Cat litter. All fuel for the fire.

The fire in your belly, the passion you have, the mindset you’re igniting is a lot like the world I just asked you to imagine.

You have the choice to accept criticism as fuel to your flame. “Who is even going to listen to you two talk [on your podcast]?” was the most recent comment I’ve gotten. (The answer is probably no one, but I’m not letting that stop me from producing the show. Maybe you can help prove her wrong in March when Michael and I launch In The Box podcast. Anyway, back on point…)

You can craft the belief Walter Bagehot had: the greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do. I take people’s doubt and let it drive me not just to prove them wrong, but to prove myself right. It works for the most part.

You can turn what the trolls say (including the troll inside your head) and use it as fuel to work smarter, try harder, and prove you can do what others (and sometimes yourself) don’t believe you can do.

It’s an option, of course. It’s on you to decide how you take things. Will you take them personally? Or as fuel to your flame?

Good Out Of The Gate

Good Out Of The Gate

Good Out Of The Gate

Not many are.

Typically, the only person who expects you to be good out of the gate is you.

I might be wrong with that statement. Some may expect good out of the gate from you, but they’ll never check.

They won’t read your first book and if they open it, they won’t read all of it. They won’t follow your blog and check in every day for the first three months you blog daily. They won’t watch your YouTube bit detailing your new invention. 50 Instagram photos down the line, they’ll never scroll down to see what your first 5 were.

Don’t focus on being good out of the gate, focus on feeling good.

You’ve started something. You’ve finished and shipped something. You’ve practiced. You’re troll-free because no one is paying attention yet. Enjoy it. Relish it. Leverage the opportunity.

What You Don’t Realize You’re Getting Paid For

Right now, as you’re reading this, you’re getting paid to ignore the trolls, turn your shoulder to the critics and shun the naysayers. Invite this belief into your world: you get paid to mute those who try dragging you down. I have yet to measure an action that receives more return on investment than ignoring trolls.

Concerned there’s an honest opinion that may help improve your work somewhere deep in the paragraph of disdain. Why not ask a friend to read the comment for you and let you know if they agree with anything. The thing about trolls is they will keep on trolling. The thing about friends is they can provide true, helpful criticism.

Ignore the trolls. Keep your faith, your motivation, your passion.

Listen to them. Lose everything.

It’s a downward spiral.

Your Ideas Do Not Suck Despite What People Say, Tweet Or Comment

Naysayer!

Zero reviews on Amazon. No comments flowing. You’re lacking “likes” and “retweets.”

Or worse yet, all the reviews are hating on your product. All the comments say your idea sucks. The only shares you’re getting on social media platforms are tweets and posts to remind people to ignore you. Actually, what you need to do is ignore them.

I’ve been regularly writing for a few years now: sharing ideas, expressing opinions, telling things how I see them. I’ve received a lot of hate, a lot of criticism… a lot of silence.

It doesn’t phase me. How?

Something I’ve learned as a writer is the best applause you will receive is the applause you never hear. It’s a weird world; Usually only the naysayers speak up. But trust me, there are people out there that love your work. They’re just quiet about it. If your goal is to get them to speak up, but their not. Only then do you have the right to say your art is shit. Otherwise keep creating, keep shipping, keep ignoring the naysayers.

I’m a firm believer that there’s not an article on the Internet that hasn’t been read without someone nodding their head in agreement. You’ll never know for certain, of course. But that feedback isn’t the reward, is it?
