There’s A Reason It’s Called A/B Testing

There’s A Reason It’s Called A/B Testing

AB Testing

Much of the time when pitching options the only rule of conduct you need is “Here’s option A… and here’s option B, which do you choose?”

No remarkable designer goes into a pitch with only one option. Doing so makes the audience feel obligated to find a reason to dislike it or pick on it or point out a miniscule detail they don’t care for.

Just showing option A is not a smart move.

Nor is showing five to 20 other options.

It’s called A/B testing, not A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/I/J/K/L testing.

You can certainly develop a bracket system, but I would push on whether your ideas are great or if they are merely good, which is why there are so many to face-off.

Time, Trust, Respect

Time

Showing up on time has its perks, but you rely on other factors being in the right place to benefit you. You can show up early, but if no one is there… now what? blog?

The times of showing up early and benefiting from it are slowly passing. We’re entering an era that every meeting, conference, and think-tank coordinator has a tight schedule.

All the while, others (primarily the millennials – guilty) are making the most out of every moment. They are continuously asking themselves if they are getting more out of “this” than they could be if they went to “that.” Options infinitum.

Being there early doesn’t create trust. Being there on time does.

Respect is attached to time and not only respect for those whose time you are using, but your own time. In the connected world, we can monitor where various events, groups, friends, meetings, and coworkers are. We owe it to ourselves to be respecting our own time as we are respecting others.

Sometimes that means leaving “this” for “that.”

Not Settling But Keeping Where You Are At

I’m a strong advocate for never settling, for accepting what you get whether you think you deserve it or not, and always striving for more.

However, there have been moments a dear friend reminds me not to settle with something. What is hard to convince him is that I’m not settling, I’m merely making the most of what I have at the moment.

I think to my Uncle who I continuously learn from. He once told me that although he is married and madly in love, he knows that there may be someone better out there for him. For one with a “do not settle” mindset, it’s hard to understand why he would stay with my aunt, but I get it, he is making the most of what he has now.*

When you make the most of what you have, it’s not settling.

Often times, making the most of what you have now is what leads to greater things in the future.

*There are also points in life where you will have the chance to reach for something better, but you won’t take it. There is a type of satisfaction when settling that involves a sense of comfortability and there is a sense of satisfaction when settling that involves pure happiness. My uncle has the latter.
