In the 21st century, we’re more about creating landmarks than we are letting anything of old become one. Good or bad is still to be determined.

Worth mentioning, “a major landmark” has become a buzzword in the business of progress. The overuse has earned itself a lesser meaning.

The following photos are of four real landmarks set in the rural settings of Blackburn, Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale districts of East Lancashire, England.

Artists of all kinds are leaving landmarks for the mass to see. The best part about the 21st century landmarks is that few of the creators sit around gazing at their own work. They are off creating more.

To the 21st century-ers, works of art have become known as landmarks simply by being placed around the world for all to see. Sure, earning recognition, but most of the time artists do so for the pure enjoyment of sharing one’s work rather than credibility, reward, or merit.

Personally, my favorite part about creating a landmark is the moment when you think to yourself onto the next one.

Look at the world of design around us. It’s cool to bend the rules of design. Ogle at what Steve Jobs has done. Even after his accomplishments, I still can’t help but wonder, with the world rewarding those who challenge the status quo and bend the rules of design and connection, who will be the next to smash every one of them?

I read an article that put the idea of how much we observe on a daily basis in better perspective. The article suggested to imagine walking a dog.

Notice how the dog is all over the place, pulling you forward, pulling you backward, to the side, off the path. Notice how the dog is sniffing everything and, quite comically, has something similar to what we call ADD. In reality, it’s simply observing absolutely everything around.

The dog hears the squirrels in the tree, the lawn mower behind the house around the corner, the starting of a car in the garage of the house you just passed. It notices the direction of the wind and the family hollering out for their children on the other side of the block.

The WOW moment for me was when, despite observing as much as a dog possibly can, the dog is still curious of what else is happening in the world and searches for more activity to observe.

Before the article I already thought we had glasses that gave us a narrow perspective of what occurs around us. Now I feel the term “dumb as a dog” is more of an insult to dogs.

The People We Run Into

I do my best to socialize with anyone around. From the results, I encourage the same to anyone wishing to get ahead in their field of interest.  2250191764_7f4cc4a6d5

You will be continuously amazed at how many great ideas people have. You will see how relatable a random person is to you. And, worth remembering, everyone wants (needs?) a bit of encouragement – you’ll be surprised how the people who know you least, encourage you the most.

Most importantly, though:

You never know when you can be there to help them.

You never know when they can be there to help you.
