Elegance > Force

Elegance

You can shout, but it’s more sincere when you whisper.

You can buy more power, but using force usually results in a path of destruction.

When you focus on tiny moments, subtle cues, and ways of connecting on a personal level, you’re performing elegantly.

It’s a far more attractive way of marketing.

Be Better

Better Not Harder

Telling your teammate to be better is partially a joke, partially a directive, and fully accurate.

To tell your teammate to try harder is an assignment that they’ll eventually come up empty on–they can only try so hard.

“That’s Wrong”

That's Wrong

There’s not really a better friend or colleague that you can ask for than one who acts as your bullshit detector, as your “that’s wrong” caller-outer, as the one who’s willing to point out your mistakes.

Without them you’d always be right, and always being right keeps you going in circles.

Find someone who you can trust to tell you when a number is wrong or an email or a story.

They’re essential to you getting better.

There’s A Story There

There's A Story There

If X is something you’re passionate about, then there’s a story to be told.

If you’re not telling a story, then you’re not really passionate about X.

What To Do When It’s Not Working

Work Results

Instant gratification has had its influence on us, that’s for sure.

I believe it has most impacted how we view our work; rather, how we expect results so quickly.

It’s likely that what you’re doing isn’t working because you haven’t been doing it long enough.

You haven’t shown up day after day.

You haven’t kept your promises long after others expected you to stop.

Think of it like an arm wrestling challenge. You don’t have to have the endurance to go at it for hours, you merely need to hold out a second longer than the other guy.

When we work to shorten the time frame to results, it becomes a race to the bottom. No one wants to pay to watch a 2 second arm wrestle.

Filling Time

Filling Time

We all have 24 hours in a day and to an extent, we control what that time is filled with.

Time, in terms of your bandwidth to take on, lead and deliver projects is somewhat paradoxical.

You’ve likely heard about Parkinson’s law…work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.

Equally as important to note, though, is that unexpected circumstances will arrive to fill a void in time if you don’t.

All the more reason to pack your calendar, build your to-do list and push yourself (and time).

When To Share Your Idea

Sharing Ideas

More often than not, now is not the right time to share your idea with the world.

It’s too much in its infancy. It’ll be crushed by those who think they are trying to help you.

Better to hold onto it, keep working at it until it can speak for itself.
