Thanks Zig

Thanks Zig

Funny how that only two days ago I mentioned Zig. He’s been a part of my life for only one year.

I had just moved to Madison and was hired to do data entry. It’s a very monotonous task that didn’t take any thinking power. Podcasts were getting big at the time, so I decided to listen to a podcast while I was working. I’ve heard the name Zig Ziglar before because I reminded someone of him. Through my search, I found this.

I listened to every single pod cast at least three times, and some of my favorites even more. I still think to myself at times, “kick the cat.” When I began listening to Zig, my eyes were opened – No. My MIND was opened. From that day, when I listened to the first podcast of ol’ Zig talking, my life changed.

I listened, I applied what I listened to and I repeated.

I downloaded his Born to Win seminar and listened to that. I then caught wind that he and his son would be publishing his final book called Born to Win (different than the seminar I downloaded). It was between downloading the seminar and finding out about his new book that I also came across Seth Godin – who happens to look up to Zig as much as me.

Thanks for teaching me how to love a woman – redhead or not.

Thanks for teaching me how to move up in work, in life.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Thanks for all the laughs.

Thanks for making public speaking look easy.

Thanks for teaching me what school, my family, my friends could never.

Thanks for all the conversations you never knew we had.

When Reaching Out

Perhaps you are emailing a recruiter at the PR agency you want to work for.

(these suggestions are coming directly from Adi, the head hunter at Edelman)

Make it easy for them to help you.

You will be more successful if you are following your passion.

Tell what you want. Never say that you don’t know.

Don’t just ask to have your résumé reviewed. What do you want? What do you have to offer besides a résumé?

Two Ways To Live Life

You can be interested and intrigued by others

or

You can be the interesting and intriguing one

One simply can’t be both at the same time. However, much like myself, you can get on and off the dance floor at your will. Personally, I spend more time on the dance floor. That doesn’t mean it’s not beneficial to step off every once and awhile.

A Few Words About PR By Rick Murray, President Of Edelman (Chicago)

Murray

“The majority of problems arise when there is a gap between expectation [from the client] and what’s being delivered.”

Murray surprised me when he went on to state that it is always the PR agencies fault. He took responsibility. He understands that a clients expectation isn’t wrong because the client is wrong, it’s wrong because the PR professional didn’t communicate properly to shift the clients expectations. OR, which Murray was more-so pointing out, the client’s expectation is accurate and the PR professionals are working on their own agenda’s with their own expectations.

Murray pointed out that it is bad relationships that can turn into strong strategies. When a PR agency isn’t pleasing their client, isn’t fulfilling their expectations, they have a challenge now, to grow, to adapt, to understand.

Murray ended with saying that accepting your failures and working past them, to close the gap between expectation and what’s being delivered, is the most difficult act that PR professionals get in. However, he knows that it can always result in something positive. “Don’t take it for granted,” he says.

You’re Inadequate

Cool. Me too. Friends?

First of all, what right does anyone have to call you inadequate? I suppose that doesn’t matter though, once we feel it, we feel it.

Secondly, if you’re into all the motivational pish-posh (Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, and about a billion bloggers), than you’re guilty of feeling inadequate. How can you not when you hear of stories about people doing more than you can ever dream of? How can you not when you catch yourself wasting time away on the couch or falling victim to the worst time-killer at large, waiting.

A lot of people can’t handle feeling inadequate, so they don’t listen to any inspirational tapes, read any encouraging novels, or watch any motivational speeches. The bad isn’t on their end, it’s on the motivators end because the goal of motivation is to making someone feel inadequate enough to improve.

It’s that nudge your coach gives you when he says, “Good job, but you can hit harder next time. I want to see that,” or when you finally read something in a magazine that you actually do, whether it’s making a holiday cupcake or creating a gratitude journal. The success of motivation is action, but you can’t just tell someone to hit harder, make a cupcake, or write in a journal.

Next time you listen/read/watch a motivational person, try not to focus so much on how they make you feel inadequate. Focus more on the how of it all, the actions you can make, the steps to take.
