If People Like You

I might be wrong, but the best way to succeed at work is to have people like you.

I don’t mean this in the sense of giving gifts, manipulating emotions, and sacrificing your personal life to please those who have a say whether you move up the work ranks or not. Quite the opposite.

Getting people to like you requires you to always have an open mind, requires you to try new experiences, and you’re always putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. It requires you to share who you really are with another person, it gives an ambitious goal to work toward, and it helps you stay positive.

So much goes into getting people to like you. What I love most is that you get an instant return on your investment even if it’s not in the form of the person liking you just yet.

Everything Is Marketing

I’m known as the marketer in my office. Most conversations I overhear I end up shouting “marketing” when I hear of something someone did on purpose, but my coworkers didn’t realize it.

During some cubical conversations, my coworkers will ask if something is marketing or not. I rarely look over from my standup desk to respond, I just shout “everything is marketing.”

It is.

Each interaction you have whether it’s with an ad, with a client or with your coworkers, you’re marketing.

It doesn’t matter if you’re thanking your boss for bringing donuts, on the phone providing customer service or out mowing your lawn. You’re marketing.

What you’re marketing is yourself and if people who see your marketing know you well enough, by extension you’re marketing your lifestyle, your job, your personality, your story, your brand.

Everything is marketing these days. It doesn’t matter if someone is watching or not.

Nor should it.

The Necessity Of Being Dynamic

Dynamic Personality

Even as a freelance PR strategist, I never tell anyone I work alone on assignments. I always have a team. I always reach out to friends, experts, and alike. I ask for help, I have a couple other PR folk review my press release before a send it back to my client. PR is always a team-based activity whether you go at it as a freelancer or on an agency.

There’s a personality necessity I learned very, very early on that’s benefited me endlessly. I’ve also seen the lack of this personality be the downfall for other PR folk. You won’t make it the PR industry if you lack the ability to be dynamic.

If you’re being hired or doing the hiring, your team’s personalities will never align perfectly, nor should they. I like to think of perfect examples this way:

  • She can be pretty pushy, but she’s damn good at what she does.
  • He procrastinates and most of the time turns in assignments at the end of his deadline, but he always turns in absolutely brilliant work.
  • She’s an introvert, for sure, and you’ll be nervous if she understands what you’re asking her to do, but her work always proves she knows.

Madison Magazine mentioned a freelance writer of theirs who never makes deadline, but they know she always turns out the best work. (Naturally, they just give her a deadline that’s a few days before their actual deadline. It works.) If MadMag cut this freelancer, the quality of the magazine would suffer. So it goes with many many agencies and teams alike.

Be prepared to be dynamic with others, for we all have flaws others will work to overlook.

Brands Businesses And Their Faces

I played an odd game last night with family. The game Faces. Basically you try to associate a particular attribute “the flirt” with one of the seven faces. If you guess the same as the dealer, you both win.

I also watched Shark Tank (worth watching otherwise I wouldn’t mention it).

Combining the two made me think a few things.

1. If given the chance, people can read your face. They are constantly analyzing every feature to see if it fits the world view you’re trying to sell. No, the grumpy looking women is not going to be the flirt. No, the stock faced men trying to pitch a tie business based on the Netflix platform are not passionate about their product.

2. Most will get close to understanding the face of your brand, but the more you stand out, the more they will all agree on what the face represents. That’s when you can call your branding a success. Everyone looks at Apple and sees the same face. It took years and plenty of differentiation and risk to get there.

3. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you’re pretty.

In a pitch for an executive board position, one candidate said, “You can tell by my personality.”

I don’t advise you say that… ever. Saying that (or something similar to that) let’s everyone know that you will change, that if you get rejected, you’ll alter your personality until you make the most people you can happy.

Worst of all, no, I can’t tell by your personality.

Personality is who you are, not who you can be or how you say you are.

If you’re new, if you want to show that you fit in or stand out, focus on sharing what you have done, what you have created, what you failed over and over at. THAT tells me more about your personality than what you can say your personality type is.

And if you have nothing to show, either say that or go back to the drawing board and build something to showcase.

28 Lessons To Living The Successful Life Through Personal-Achievement Principles

Yes it’s a mouthful but it is the best description that I can give to the following 28 lessons. Enjoy.

 

1. Better results does not make a better plan. A better plan makes better results.

2. Happiness is meant to be designed. You create it, you sculpt it, you make it.

3. Discipline: without it there is no bridge from your goal to your accomplishments.

4. Success is sending yourself an invitation to grow, develop, move up, build more, create more, invest more, innovate more and raise above mediocrity.

17. Make every part of your character visible.

22. Combine accurate and imaginative thinking to create your art.

23. You won’t last without good health.

24. Not to mention exercise is the absolute greatest habit you can create to stimulate the positive senses.

25. Living in the moment is derived from the collection of experience you have had controlling, focusing and centering your attention on the positive, on the material that will help you produce results you care about and on the search for what you can learn from every moment.

26. Everything remarkable was the result of overcoming adversity. If you come face-to-face with adversity or even sometimes get defeated, you are on the right path. Nothing worthy comes easy.

27. Visualization doesn’t need to be done all at once. Visualization is something that is meant to be anointed to all the various positive thoughts that float through your mind every day.

An Apple A Day, Will Make Success Stay!

Every store, every online market, every shop; is a business. And every business has a goal. Already, every goal for a business is the same; they want to succeed. Now as consumers we run over the speed bump too quickly of what the meaning of success is to the owner and how they strive to achieve it. We want what we want when we want it, right?

Wrong. In a world where someone can create a business in less than a month, we find ourselves pushed and forced to make impulse purchases, unacknowledged buys and cheaply made items from one way advertising messages. On top of all that, there is the lack of honest help and service from employees or even the owner.

Just because a customer leaves happy does not mean the business interaction was a success. They might catch an advertisement on TV of the same product being sold cheaper at a closer store, or the item might have broken already, or they come to find that they aren’t even using it. But business owners tend to live in ignorant bliss with this fact.

But not all.

Every now and then, we, as customers, come across a really great store. When was the last time you walked into a store and were actually greeted by the owner of it? What a difference it is to be greeted by the owner then by a paid greeter at Wal-Mart! The first thing you catch is the passion of the owner. Isn’t a passion how every business gets created? Yet through the expansion or the lack of business, customers quickly no longer see the passion, but only see a large red sign that says “SALE”. Let me make a comparison here, there are businesses who will post a sale on a specific item, because they need some extra money or it just needs to be sold. Then there are businesses that charge you the full price but offer you a discount when you go to ring it up because it is your first time there, or the business noticed YOUR passion for what you are buying. Let me tell you, getting items scanned is not a business relationship. And in the long run, a 10% discount beats a “SALE” anyway.

So when was the last time you went to a store where the owner was there and could answer any question about any product? Rare, isn’t it? It is time for everyone to reevaluate the meaning of success. A business ran with passion, overflowing with knowledge and the willingness to share it with their customers, and striving to establish a connection through the business relationship is TRUE SUCCESS!
