You’ll Make Very Little Impact

You’ll Make Very Little Impact

Doing Things Differently

There’s certainly a chance you’ll make a very large impact, but the chances are slim.

Slim indeed.

But this should be a motivator more than a turn off.

With nearly 100,000 public schools in America, as a teacher, you have an opportunity to do something different without negatively affecting the system of the other 99,999 schools.

With 500,000+ businesses starting up each year, you, as a now business owner, have an opportunity to do something different with your business without it negatively affecting the trend of others starting their businesses.

With 290,000+ books getting published each year, as a writer you have an opportunity to do something different without breaking down the publishing industry.

There are so many people doing what you are doing that you now have permission to do what you do in a drastically different way. And don’t forget, no one is paying much attention anyway.

I wrote you’re unlikely to make a huge impact, a real dent in the universe. It makes me wonder if knowing that, are you willing to give up your attempt? If you may only influence one other person through your trial of something new, something different, do you believe there’s no point in following through with it then?

Would you rather an aspiring teacher quit his pursuit and work at a gas station instead because he knows he may only impact one or two students in five years of teaching?

This is a call to experiment. And once you experiment, experiment more. Regardless of whether you’re making a large or small impact doing so.

If it’s any consolation, your chances of making a huge positive impact are far greater than making a huge negative one. It’s easier to redirect a current than it is to get others to stop all currents completely because of some pesky seaweed buildup.

For Some Safe Is A Selling Point

It shouldn’t be surprising there are safe products out there (safe, successful ones, mind you ).

Think of a clothing line that doesn’t want to be edgy, trendsetting or risky. Think of a business that has no true uniqueness about them. Consider a service that does nothing more than their competition does. Again, they are still successful. Think Craftsmen or Ford or Lands’ End. Safe is there selling point or so I’ve lead you to think.

The reality of it is you don’t need to take huge marketing risks or product design risks if what you’re selling isn’t the product. Perhaps you’re not really selling anything special. Perhaps you’re simply standing up for something.

Ford stands up for being tough.

TOMS stands up for giving.

Seth Godin stands up for… well, standing up.

If you don’t want to stand out, by all means, stand up for something. Playing things safe for nothing won’t lead you to success, but playing things safe for something larger than yourself will.

Stay Positive & What Do You Stand For?

Where To Stand, Sit, Walk, Juggle…

In the front. Always.

Those who sit in the front of the classroom learn better.

Those who are in the front of the line get the best deals.

Those who perform in the front get noticed.

Not-so-coincidentally, the bold act of being in front, where everyone can see, where you can’t hide a thing, that’s what makes you stand out. It’s not that you’re the loudest or wildest dressed, it’s not that you can juggle 6 balls instead of 5, it’s that you’re in the front.

Very few ever go on a long observational journey looking for you or what you offer. Why bother when they know the best is always right in front of them? Call it lazy, convenient or call it a sifting mechanism. If they know you and 99 other people can hand-toss a delicious pizza, they’ll choose the one in front. Every time.

Stay Positive & Where Are You?

Appearance Isn’t Everything, But It’s Something

In continuation with yesterday’s writing about having a presence, I was going to write about having a unique appearance, one that someone in the industry you’re trying to break into doesn’t already have.

Seth Godin (jokes?) that he shaved his head and wore different socks on each foot because no one in his field was doing that. It made him stand out.

For me, I follow Oscar Wilde’s adage that you can never be overeducated or overdressed. I dress in a way that makes me stand out amidst other professionally dressed players.

The idea, though, of standing out in your field by changing your appearance has pitfalls.

“I’m too scared to buy anything from that guy!” is exactly what a friend of mine said when we walked past a table of shiny rocks and gem stones. The seller was wearing a gray tank-top, roughly (and I mean roughly) six foot two, with arms like logs. Not to mention, he was tattooed on his chest, his arms, his neck, and all around his face.

Does he stand out in his stone selling business? I’m sure he does.

Does it work out to his advantage? Of course not.

Yes, as a book salesman, you want to stand out, as a writer, you want to stand out, as a marketer, you want to stand out; it needs to be everyone’s priority to stand out, but don’t catch yourself going overboard. The face tattoos… a bit overboard.

Breaking Habit / Tradition / Just Like Old Times

Paul Madonna (the name) may make you think of singer/songwriter Madonna, but that Madonna is not nearly as truthful and real as Paul, the creator of the image above.

I had to share this image with you. I want you to realize – much like I did – how entertaining it is. How true, powerful, and, well, funny the actions of the narrator are. It’s a positive feeling.

Now, imagine being the person who throws the linguini. (Maybe you already have.) And you began to think how you can’t do it. You fear getting in trouble. You don’t want to stand out. Everyone’s eyes will be on you. People will judge you.

Yet, you didn’t think that when you originally read the caption to the picture. It wasn’t until you imagined being in that position.

The quickest way to break habit, make a rumpus out of tradition, and prevent just like old times from occurring, is to – well, I gave it away already.

Break habit

Make a rumpus out of tradition

Prevent just like old times

Stop convincing yourself to remain compliant, to be comfortable with mediocrity and normality. If it wasn’t for someone to stand out, Paul may never had the idea to create this image, I would have never seen it, and you would not have been sparked with the thought of creating your own image, your own story. And I’ll tell ya, people love stories.

Upon Request

I wrote a post on my other website outlying that the best way to write content people want to read is to ask the people what content they would want you to write. This is one of those posts. In fact, this is one of three of those posts.

The First Suggestion: White Sox

Can you guess what the most obliterating concept is to the “self,” to the “individual,” to what makes us, us?

Conformity.

It crowds the planet and persuades anyone wanting to step out of their comfort zone to stay in it. Conformity in its most serious forms can influence people to act terribly and perform nauseous tasks (you can guess what I’m referring to). As all great things (good or bad) do, it all begins with something small, something that people barely notice.

What if I told you that the seed of conformity was white sox? That the simple action of you wearing white socks, having them match, has set you on the path of entanglement and influence since you were a child.

Can you recall the days in school where you were able to wear crazy socks? In fact, it may have even been called “crazy sock day.” Everyone was laughing, enjoying themselves, and more importantly, expressing themselves. What school didn’t tell you was that crazy sock day was just a different way to label be yourself day.

Wear different socks. Wear ankle socks. Wear knee-highs. Wear colored. Polka-doted. Striped. Advertisement socks. Your favorite colored socks. Your friends socks. One dirty sock. No socks. I dare you.

Want to be more of yourself? Go back to the origin of when you began conforming.
