If shipping is an event for you, you’re not doing it like an artist.

Events are for gatherings, huge interactions, and personal conversations with someone willing to contribute as much, if not more than you.

Events are for seminars and being the star of a publicized interview about your latest art.

Events have less to do with consistency, and more to do with the spontaneity of acknowledgment.

The actual shipping of your art is a habit, not an event. It’s meant to be a constant and predictably unpredictable action. Risk, over and over and over again leads to success. Risk once in a while just keeps you alive while you stand still.

Writing On The Wall

My friend Michelle inspired me to write this post.

When I was growing up, my first AIM (AOL instant messenger) username was Writing0nTh3WaLL. My favorite song was “The Writing On The Wall.” And oddly enough, I liked to write on walls. – Still do –

Today, I read a post of Michelle’s which said, “You may never see the writing on the wall.”

In NYC, there’s a thing called the Underbelly Project. It’s where you can find all the writing on the wall. But it’s a different kind of writing, the most passionate kind; the kind that those writing it knew it may not work.

When you wait and look for the writing on the wall you aren’t only playing it safe, you’re regressing.

With your art, nothing is certain even in your most certain moments. When you are waiting for the guarantee of success or failure, when you rehearse through every failure or success, when you try to  steady your hand before you take a whack at the nail, you’ll never follow through. Doing is about risking.

When you use the writing on the wall idiom, you’re also insinuating that there are people who don’t see it. (If everyone could see it, there would be no need for the idiom.)

Leave it to other people to see the writing on the wall.

Meet By Chance

We meet few people by chance.

Every year we meet hundreds – and for some, thousands – of people willing to be a part of our lives, to benefit us in some way.

Pause and think of all the people who you considered as truly meeting last year. Was there something special attached to meeting that person? Did you help them? Did they assist you? Did one or both of you leave learning something? Are you still communicating and benefiting off each other’s energy?

You never meet anyone without something special transpiring from it. Every meet, all are opportunities in one experience or another. We are due them certain considerations as much as they are due us.

The people who get the most out of meeting someone are the ones who know there’s a reason for them meeting this person, and they are going to make sure they find it.

It’s not coincidence that the most successful people in the world have the most connections with other people, the most communications, the most meet-ups.

I understand that you may learn a skill or lesson one day from conquering adversity, but if you don’t review it or put it into further action, it disappears after seven days (or less). As a result of this understanding, I highly encourage you to bookmark the home page, come back and read my new posts and review the archives. Unlike other blogs, I came out swinging since day one and will never write a “filler” post that fails to reach the level of impression that I deem acceptable.

On the note of adversity, Marvin Ashton was known for stating,

“Adversity will surface in every life. How we meet it makes the difference.”

Adversities are a part of living and we choose the way we react to each adversity in our lives. I would be the last to deny that adversities can be exceedingly difficult. Many times they will be senseless, unfair, painful, and beyond our control to prevent. However, they come into our lives for a reason. We can choose to learn valuable lessons from each adversity we encounter.

The true purpose of GarthBox:
