Is Productivity What You Really Need?
Why do you want to be more productive? That’s a question you really need to consider before you embark on your productivity campaign. If your answer is to have more time to figure out how to be ever more productive, you’re digging yourself a grave. If you’re in it for leisure, for family, for friends, then productivity is worth it.
Let us not forget, though, that just doing the work of doing the work is an acceptable option. One I personally tend to favor.

Elaboration On Shadowing
Yesterday I wrote that learning must be done through action, not solely observance.
My dining experience today resonated this philosophy and made me question why they call it “job shadowing.”
Last time I watched my shadow, it moved when I moved, did what I did, messed up when I did. My shadow didn’t hover behind me, it didn’t lean over my shoulder, it didn’t just follow me, it made all the same moves I did.
The waitress introduced herself and the trainee trailed right behind her the entire afternoon, from table to table. Her cheeks had to hurt because beside walking, all that she was doing was smiling. There was no conversation, no getting drinks, no effort. Not her fault at all. It’s the fault of society’s misconception of training people.
Can she get by and meet the needs of the restaurant by shadowing this way – sure. But that comes with externalities.
Those being poorer experiences for the consumer, the “teacher,” and the shadower.

I’ve argued for some time that showing up isn’t even half the battle. Showing up to learn something, attending seminars, job shadowing and the alike are overrated and misunderstood. And quite frankly, a waste of a professional’s or an employer’s time.
Professionals don’t want you near them to just watch and learn anymore, people want you there to help. The learning happens along the way.
If you’re asking what you can watch, what you can observe, what you can listen to or read up on, then you’re asking the wrong questions.
Better to ask how you can help, what you can create, who needs assistance?
Seeing adds to memory. Doing adds to experience.
Guess which is more valuable when it comes to employment?

The Direction You’re Facing
There are many lessons to learn from riding a bike. There are, however, some lessons that can only be learned by riding something larger and more powerful. A motorcycle for instance.
One of the first lessons I learned that just about blew my mind was when you’re making a turn or even following a curve while riding a motorcycle, you look first and turn second. Actually, saying that you turn second seems too active.
When you look where you want to turn, you’re bike follows your eyes.
This, of course, isn’t just a lesson about riding a motorcycle. It’s a lesson about goal setting. Instead of forcing movement toward a goal, instead of just facing forward, instead of letting the actions you take decide where you will go, you just face the direction of the destination you want to be in.
Sometimes getting where you want to go is effortless.

How You Compete With 24/7 Service
You don’t.
There are only 24 hours in the day, most companies and businesses think that they need to work all 24 hours each day. If they aren’t there when you call, that’s bad business, right? There’s a great article that I will be posting after this in an assorted links post (link #2) that essentially shows people are smarting up and living a bit more humanly.
For some reason, we’ve lost the concept of
- “family first”
- “put what’s best for you and those closest to you first”
- “friends and family first, product and business second”
Fortunately, we’re slowly getting our shit together as we focus on being more productive – not so we have more time to discover how to be even more productive (referring to link #2), but to have time to enjoy life and focus on loved ones, on what really matters.
I’m guilty of making this mistake when I was starting my brand. I lost more than I gained from it.
